Are Unite the Union Pro-Vivisection?

It has come to the attention of anti-vivisection activists that national trade union, Unite, are members of the animal research industry's lobbying organisation, Understanding Animal Research who defend those who test on and torture animals. It is obviously more than a case, on Unite's part, of "we represent people in various industries, some of which conduct vivisection..." when the only other members of UAR are those who conduct animal experiments, including Huntingdon Life Sciences, Sequani, Universities of Bradford, Oxford and Cambridge, Quintiles, Covance, Harlan, Wickham (the list goes on) - all of whom have been exposed for animal abuse.

Understanding Animal Research is the new name for Simon Festing's bunch of Research Defence Society mates, however is mainly funded by Charles River Laboratories (primate importer, rodent breeder). Key members include Tipu Aziz, infamous Oxford primate researcher who backed cosmetics testing on animals, Coling Blakemore who sewed up kitten's eyes and more.

Please contact Unite the Union and ask them about their stance on animal experiments:

Duh......

This really shouldn't be all that hard to understand. We are multidimensional, we are each incolved with a number of issues, and there is NO GOOD REASON to suppose that we will always be on the same side. In other words, just because we are allies working together on issue A doesn't mean that some days we might not find ourselves on opposite sides over issue B.

This is the reality. Trying to pretend that it can't be so is self delusion. I know, would be nice, would simplify matters greatly. But it's not real.

Good grief --- what do you think the members of the butchers union do for a living? So --- that means you can work with them as long as what you are trying to work together about is labor issues, the things that affect us as working people. But you can't expect them to be helping you on the days when you are wearing your militant vegetarianism hat.

Similarly with other causes. You can have no (reasonable) expectation that everybody on the same side as you about the war are going to be on the same side as you with regard labor vs management or the same side as you with regard to animal rights or the same side as you with regard to GLBT issues or ..........

We have to cope, have to learn how to cooperate when we can and not let the fact that over other things we fight get in the way.

Come on people, let's all defend a vivisector's right to torture animals!

Sod that mate, you either have morals and principals you stick to or you don't - simple as.

Unite are a bunch of scummy bastards, working with the arms trade and now vivisection. Will they be defending the right of BNP lackies to gas jews if they get into power? Nope, so why defend someone's right to make a plane which will kill kids in Iraq, or these mentioned vivisection companies?

I personally, along with a lot of people, hope vivisection institutions close down and they all lose their jobs. Tough shit isn't it!

Please differentiate between Unite members and the Unite leadership. The leadership are in bed with the government. Most of the members are not.

Unite officials ordered the end of the Visteon Occupation:

Unite operate as a scab union against the RMT:
 http://www.rmtbristol.org.uk/2009/11/bob_crow_awards_longmembership.html
"On the situation at Wessex Connect, where the company is imposing a union (UNITE) on the workforce, the majority of whom are in the RMT, (Bob Crow) said: “It is a disgrace. Wessex Connect workers should have the right to choose their union. The RMT will not desert our members there.”"

Unite leadership undermined the Keep Tyne & Wear Metro Public Campaign:
 http://www.socialistparty.org.uk/articles/8581
"They constantly denounced the activities of the KMP as "harassment" of Labour MPs and councillors. While nominally part of the campaign, the two unions consistently attempted to hamper its public activity. They withdrew over £7,000 worth of initially pledged funding."

Unite support the expansion of Heathrow, against the opinion of their members who live in the villages that would be evicted.
