Anti-capitalist presence at wave

Steve | 06.12.2009 17:32 | Climate Chaos | Workers' Movements

A few turned out but not so many as could have been or even as expected, but then what do you expect? One communst red flag was present and some of anarchist flags... I reckon in all about 40 people... It was good that it was organised and they got their message across.

Anti-Capitalist presence at the Wave
Anti-Capitalist presence at the Wave

It was good to see even though numbers were down no doubt due to some having gone off to Copenhagen, the other fake leftists, social reformers, trots and other fake leftists would not come anyway to an anti-capitalist bloc! Hardly! They would rather curry favour with the establishment rather than fight it in the true meaning of the word. However, the few that did turn up got their message across via a megaphone chanting "burn the bankers not the planet", "save the planet- smash the system", " burn cops - not coal" , "no coal, no bailout, no capitalism" and others. As usual, everywhere they went the cops came out of the wood and began writing notes and and blabla over their walkies. Definately there could have been a bigger presence in the anti-capitalist bloc. The anti-capitalist movement needs to grow here in Britain I think. I reckon now is really the time to put aside ideological differences and interpretations of history and concentrate on building a truly militant anti-capitalist movement encompassing all militant left groups, whether they be communist or anarchist etc, and unite in actions.... That way the ruling class will take it more seriously......but if the left movement remains sectarian and picky, choosy and elusive.......we only assist the ruling class instead of working towards smashing it. The more divided we are, the easier it is to keep it that way for them. In my view, anybody or any group sowing sectarianism only assists the ruling class. Now is the time to really start building truly anti-capitalist movement. We have got nowhere so far split and divided, that's the way it will remain unloess we draw in all hard left militant forces and groups into one bloc. Then we can show a f--k to the bourgsioise! All unite! Smash the system!

talk about divide and rule

How dare you speak about us being divided when you do just that in describing your little bloc as if it were the only anti-capitalist presence at the wave. There where many many beside yourself who take and anti-capitalist position, both individuals and organised groups. If you mustered 40 people, good for you, a drop in the ocean of the 100,000 who marched but in now way where you the only anti-capitalist or even the biggest organised grouping there. For example, the camp for climate action had twice that many camping over night and many many more around during the wave. So don't go around moaning about us being divided when your appraisal of your bloc does exactly that.

Same old rant and as predicted, they didnt any more than anyone else. Afraid if you want to work with other radicals, you have to go any talk to them, not just strut around dressed in black. If you dont, guess what you are, ...... a sectarian.

Two apparently unrelated comments taken from the above article:

"Social reformers, trots and other fake leftists would not come... Hardly!"

"I reckon now is really the time to put aside ideological differences... and unite"

more action needed

Just wanted to say to the writers of the comments above. It isn't as if the people who made up that particular block yesterday all read and approved this message, so don't make comments attacking everyone who participated in that block because of the opinion of one guy. To me, at the time, there wasn't such a high level of sectarianism. However, there was a vast lack of organisation, and it would have been nice so see or coordinate with some of the Climate Camp anti capitalists, and other anti capitalist groups. I think we all now have a responsibility to fix our 'apparent' broken movement and try and resist from falling into stupid in fights, whether said fights come from one guy and an indymedia post, or the people who try and place themselves on the 'highground', in such a rediculous way, by writing comments like "anarko tantwum". GROW UP THE LOT OF YOU!

its time to realise...

06.12.2009 21:54

its time to realise that the camp for climate action isn't an anti-capitalist group. Yes, it was set up by anti-capitalist, yes, there are anti-capitalists within it but in terms of praxis (the combination of theory and practice) there definitely not. Uncritically marching in the wave, an NGO event designed to encourage and support "our representatives" at Copenhagen is hardly a radical gesture.

Not to say that this bloc was much better. When will people realise that simply calling for something on indymedia without any longer term work will always limit the possiilities of what can happen on the day.

sigh

lots to work on

For Militant Unity in Actions against the system

Yea, there is lots of work on in building a militant anti-capitalist movement, and I see in the message a need pull all radical/militant groups and forces together and work firstly towards UNITY OF ACTIONS against this capitalist system. I was there, it was good. Well done for all who turned up. Lets work to make it even bigger next time.

Disapointed

07.12.2009 11:38

Took one look at the 'anti-capitalist block' and walked off. I thought the idea was to promote ourselves to the other people on the march. One guy with a megaphone holding a commie flag and shouting dumb slogans is as good outreach as setting yourself on fire and trying to persuade others to join in.

Lets get organised next time yeah?

unsurprising

07.12.2009 11:45

the bloc was embarrassing but i suppose i shouldn't have been so surprised: like someone already said, an indymedia callout does not make an event. however, with more people and perhaps an ounce of planning it could have been interesting: it seemed to me that amongst a sea of co op/christian aid banners, the bloc simply by being mildly antagonistic created the closest thing to any sort of rupture during the march... missed opportunity.

Anti cap bloc

It went quite well. Numbers were low. Our presence was definately felt, both by the cops and the media. Pretty good considering the small number of comrades that turned up.

wasted chance

07.12.2009 15:44

I'm with Henry and Again. This was another total wasted opportunity. Yeah, the Bloc was beyond embarrassing- some guy with a hammer and sickle 'for bolshevism' flag shouting 'anti-capitalista' is just humiliating to be associated with. But the whole march was a carefully stage-managed PR event- a group of anarchists who walked straight to the front got stopped by the police for an 'unlawful demonstration'- these liberal demos should be a chance to offer an alternative notion of symbolic resistance which could be turned to direct action. At the very least they should shake the hell out of these marches.

That is how blocs on the continent reached their ascendancy, not by sitting at home tut-tutting. A regular, well attended bloc (without 'for bolshevism' flags preferably) on liberal demos, from climate change to education to anti-war marches could start to make a decent impact by offering that rupture, showing dissent is a voice of ordinary people, rather than ordinary people being stooges for NGOs like Christian Aid.

Whats with the hammer and sickle?

07.12.2009 16:02

Whats the problem with red flags present and an anti capitalist block? Anti-capitalist movement includes all those elements which support and seek to destroy the system..and that includes revolutionary bolshevik communists.

Anti-state capitalism

07.12.2009 21:30

The problem is pretty simple: anti-capitalism is anyone proposing to destroy the system and replace it with anarchism/genuine communism. Bolsheviks seek to replace free market capitalism with authoritarian state capitalism, therefore they shouldn't be welcome.
