Preparations for Calais No Border Camp taking shape

No Borders | 04.06.2009 23:31 | Migration

Initiatives from the UK, France, Belgium and Germany are currently preparing a protest camp against border controls in Calais, France. The camp, which will take place between 23th and 29th June, will include a transnational demonstration on Saturday, 27th June. The callout describes the aims of the camp as "highlighting the realities of the situation of migrants in Calais" and "challenging the authorities on the ground, to protest against increased repression of migrants and local activists alike." The camp mobilisation in the UK is carried by the No Borders UK network, which calls for the freedom of movement for all and an end to all migration controls.

A mobilisation tour around the UK, which includes an exhibition of striking photographs from Calais by a French photographer, is already underway. The tour is currently in Manchester and will then move on to Cardiff.

The tour is also used to promote a new No Borders publication, A No Borders A-Z, in which the network describes its positions as "anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian."

no borders

05.06.2009 19:47

Although i kinda understand no-borders' ideaology, I struggle to see how it would work.

If there were no borders and anyone could go where they wanted, would that be a good thing?
An example could be Mauritius.... If they adopted a no-borders policy then lots of rich people would move there and buy property. This would completely destroy their local economy, the native people would no longer be able to buy property as it would be out of their price range. Local businesses would be stamped out by more aggressive and better financed competitors, resulting in a massive change.

This change would be good for the immigrants but bad for the local people.

Other issues are things like diseases. We didn't have any TB in this country until recently due to immigration. Aids is the same issue, if you get lots of Africans moving here, then it stands to reason that we will have more Aids here too.

No borders may be a good thing for immigrants, but it is a bad thing for the people who reside here.
This is why i don't think it will ever happen as you are unlikely to get popular support for something that is bad for people.

Immigration

06.06.2009 23:17

Immigration is not about the economy. Whatever happens in the social climate means shit in the economy. Whatever happens with immigration, we'll still be able to have a nice house and good food. Why worry about the economy? You'll have to spend more money? Boo-fucking-hoo, at least you've got it to spend. It's fucking selfish to say "You immigrants can't come to my country cause I'll have to pay a little more for petrol for you to have a better life". Hell no, welcome them all with open arms.

I think you need to remember that No Borders is taken to be more than just removing borders. The majority of No Borders campaigners believe in the destruction of the state and capitalism and therefore the demolition of both nationality and borders. Therefore it is essentially a world wide stuggle and cannot happen without all borders being deconstructed at the same time (this is logical as you cannot have one part of the world without borders as inevitably there will be a line defining the neighbouring nation states, and therefore a border)

At this point, the demographic of certain areas changes. A worldwide movement to destroy worldwide borders and nation states inevitably ends wars, and this changes the nature of immigration in the first place, immigrants cease to exist, and with the end of wars, there is easily enough land for everyone to live happily where they want. 'Immigrants' to this and other countries can return to their 'homes' which they may have had to flee due to war, etc, or people who feared or could not afford to move out of this country, despite wanting to, can inevitably leave, thus allowing for a influx of people who can participate in their communities, and vice versa everywhere else in the world.

Business as we know it would cease to exist, and so would the global economy in the capitalist sense.

If you view no borders in the anarcho-capitalist sense:

i.e. "If they adopted a no-borders policy then lots of rich people would move there and buy property. This would completely destroy their local economy, the native people would no longer be able to buy property as it would be out of their price range. Local businesses would be stamped out by more aggressive and better financed competitors, resulting in a massive change."

then yes you are correct. With Capitalism maintained along with the destruction of borders would end in a corporate controlled world, effective corporatios would colonise the world and create their own states of economic control (not too dissimilar to how the world is now with the free market economy), inevitably taking advantage of the poor and those not controlling the means of production.

But No Borders is an anti-capitalist movement, so that removes this issue. No Borders should be taken in the context of a wider movement.

Medics needed

14.06.2009 16:35

Experiences from over a decade of action camps and mobilisations have
shown that when we come together for mass action it is important to
collectively organise the capacity to deal with medical emergencies. It
has also shown that when we take to the streets to protest against police
and state brutality and social control, we are often putting ourselves at
considerable risk. The French police in particular are known for their
excessive use of tear gas and concussion grenades. It is therefore
important to be prepared to deal with possible injuries.

There is currently no medical team coordination for the Calais camp, but
already there are a number of people with street and camp medic experience from the UK, US, Spain and France who aim to provide
information and some first aid coverage for the camp and actions. How much
support we can offer will depend on how many people we are and what skills
and materials we have available, so any help you can give is very gratefully received! Do you have any useful equipment? Do you have skills or experience?

WHAT WE NEED:
We need people with medical training, trained first aiders, street
medics, nurses and doctors who can volunteer for the medical team. We
also need people with experience of public order situations, particularly
tear gas and of the French police, and people with experience of the
medical system in France. Administering first aid on demos should be done
as a team (at least in twos) and requires people who understand the
situation and can keep their head in a crisis. We may also need people to
help with logistics, communications, cars, drivers etc. So if you would
like to participate but are not sure how you could help, get in touch!

Main day of Action on Saturday 27th

14.06.2009 16:44

from  http://london.noborders.org.uk/node/183

Transnational demo for freedom of movement and the abolition of migration controls. Calais, Saturday 27th June 2009.

In Calais there are around 800-1000 migrants at any one time that are trying to cross the Channel, under constant harassment from the police.
These migrants are harassed because they do not have the right papers, or in many cases no papers at all – they are 'sans-papier'.

These 'sans-papier' in Calais are only the tip of the iceberg: it is estimated that there are over 200,000 sans-papier in France, 1 million in the UK, and up to 7 million in Europe as a whole.
All sans-papier face the same battle – to live and work without exploitation, harassment and fear of arrest and deportation.

No Borders calls for a world without papers, where everyone lives where they choose.

The route of the demo is the reverse of the walk that many migrants in Calais make on a daily basis – from Coquelles, where they are detained, to the lighthouse, where there is a daily food distribution.

We call on all individuals and groups that struggle for the rights of migrants to sign this call and mobilise for the demo.

The demo is part of a NoBorder camp that is taking place in Calais from 23rd to 29th June

The demo will start at 10am from the lighthouse on Boulevard des Alliés.

If not, you can pay in cash on the day but we are really trying to avoid this as we don;t want all that cash floating around all weekend.

Please confirm your place asap by emailing  londonnoborders@riseup.net or, preferably, calling the following number: 07535319119. If there's no answer leave a messgae or send a text and we'll get back to you.

UPDATE AND INFO FROM CALAIS NO BORDER CAMP

24.06.2009 16:57

A farcical curtain of steel has descended on Calais, and the massive campaign of demonisation of our camp by the local authorities continues in the press. The camp is now fully set up with approx 300 people from all over Europe. Many local people are visiting the site and a group of around 40 mostly Kurdish and Afghani migrants. It is nice big site, quite open for people to come walk around and a lot of local kids hanging out. It runs alongside the main motorway from the port out of town and is just a few minutes from the Jungle, the makeshift camps where migrants are living. Many of the migrants seem to be very young, one just 12 year old Afghani visited the camp last night. Migrants report that currently the controls at the border are very tight and that no one has been getting through for few weeks. The number of migrants in Calais are at their highest in several years.

Repression of migrants continues; on Monday night there was a violent raid of squat in town where mostly Eritrean people were living. One person had their arm broken during the attack. There are rumours of another one this afternoon; we waiting to hear more from peopleat the camp who have gone down to support the migrants. People from camp are also helping at food distro points that are being hassled by police.

Police presence in town is very heavy and both activists and migrants are being stopped and searched in the area. Some items have been taken but we have not heard of major problems getting to camp so far.
The atmosphere on site is good, the migrants here seem to be enjoying some conversations and games of football they would not normally have the space to play and at least for now it is quite relaxed. There are three kitchens, showers being built, internet up and running, cinema, workshops, medical tent, trauma support, legal tent, and an invite has gone out to local people and other migrants in area to come to camp.

In a direct action this morning, 30 people blockaded detention centre Losquin in Lille using arm tubes to prevent removal of someone scheduled for today. 29 people were arrested and are due to be released tonight. A group of solidarity formed and we are all hoping for more actions to show oour resitance to this horrific machine

An information leaflet is being distributed on what to expect in the UK for migrants is being distributed and being translated to Arabic and Kurdish languages. There is also a newspaper being produced on site, Nomad, and distributed in town, accompanied by bike sound system.

The route of demo on Saturday being negotiated with authorities and they put out a press release today to 'reassure local people as to the nature of our intentions and we want to invite all local associations and people who would like to see the situation improve for migrants and those that help them to join us on Saturday for our march which is still planned to gather at 10am on Saturday in front of the lighthouse. We call for the inhabitants of Calais and the activists of associations, trade unions and political parties and not to be intimidated by the discourse of the authorities and to come and
participate in the activities of the camp and to the demonstration on Saturday.'

Apparently, the wearing of masks has been banned by police. More information to follow.

A big discussion will be happening tonight about local situation with the humanitarian groups. It is our belief on the camp that people should have free movement and the situation here is a million miles away from that. Explaining to the migrants that we are against the border but that we are not able to make it any easier to cross is frustqrting to say the least! They are so bravely challenging the border and ricking so much every night. This camp has already strengthened the transnational solidarity and re-politicised the issue locally. It must be just the beginning and we must do all we can to continue to fight the border regimes that are causing so much suffering. It is one thing to hold a political position and quite another to be here and trying to see a way that this situation can be changed.

We denounce in the strongest terms the attempts to criminalise us and to intimidate local people into silence on an issue that affects them directly. We denounce completely and call an end to the extreme violence and intimidation being directed towards migrants by the police,
