Tamil solidarity call-out - US embassy protest on Monday morning

rikki | 17.05.2009 22:37 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Terror War

with news of more than 1000 new deaths and thousands injured in just a few hours today in Vanni, tamils in london are calling for a solidarity protest outside the US embassy, grosvenor square on monday morning to urge barack obama to intervene.

the protest is called for 9am on monday 18th may until 2pm at grosvenor square

news is coming through that the sri lankan army is continuing to use white phosphorous and chemical weapons. there are up to 25,000 people seriously injured in the area, and with the only medical facilities under constant bombardment from sri lankan rockets, most of those are expected to die.

the tamil community is asking for support in their efforts to persuade obama to intervene to stop the further slaughter. if you can't make it to the protest, there is a list of contacts being circulated. every effort to write to/email/telephone people on this list might just help save a life.

US embassy?

18.05.2009 07:53

What's the US embassy got to do with it? If you wanted to have some real impact it should be outside the Chinese embassy which has been providing the Sri Lankan government with money, arms, logistics and political support.

why we call on the USA to intervene

18.05.2009 07:54

Even though the Tamil Tigers have publically declared they have laid down their weapons, the Sri Lankan Army say the fighting is continuing. In keeping with their penchant for doublespeak, this may just be a verbal expression for their continuation of indiscriminate shelling and artillery fire on the defenceless civilian captive population in the so-called 'no fire zone'. In the past 24 hours, over 3000 civilians lie dead on the streets while another 25,000 are critically injured with no medical attention. Thousands are in bunkers in the 2km sq enclave they are held captive within.

Sri-Lankan forces have been witnessed digging holes with mechanical diggers, as claims of numbers who have fled the area remain unverified. The UN is being called on to verify this. Meanwhile, there are reports that among those civilians who have been taken out of the area by SL forces, children are being seperated from their parents.

They got the bastard

The latest reports from battlefront reveal that LTTE leader V. Prabhakran, has been killed this morning (May 18). The sources further say that LTTE's intelligence wing leader Pottu Amman and Sea Tiger wing leader Soosai were also killed.

Savimbi moment

If it is true that Prabhakran is dead (the SL government reports he was killed while attempting to flee the battlefield hidden in an ambulance), I cannot see the Tamil Tigers continuing their campaign. Prabhakran ruled the LTTE with an iron hand and developed an extreme personality cult - his loss will therefore be devastating.

I see this as a moment similar to the one in which Jonas Savimbi was killed and his similarly ruthless and brutal UNITA rebel/terrorist movement abandoned their long-running war in Angola.

Hopefully this will finally bring peace to Sri Lanka. Lets remember that the war was claiming thousands of lives every year and had been going for more than 25 years.

Three more bloody decades

18.05.2009 20:33

This conflict is clearly being setup to continue for another three decades.

Complete waste of a chance where the Tamils had representation that was quite solid.

This is the way of the world it seems.
Iraq, Afghanistan now Sri Lanka
