----------------------------------------------

On Wednesday 8th April, 2008, 12 students from the North West of England were arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000, in what was billed as a foiled major terror plot on a par with 7/7.

13 days later all 12 had been released without charge and with no suggestion of evidence against them, other than possession of sugar and photographs from about town. Eleven of them, however, were ordered to be deported by the Home Secretary and ten of the them are appealing in a process during which they may remain in detention

More info regarding HMP Strangeways

Manchester prison, formerly known as Strangeways, is a local prison which accepts people remanded into custody from the courts in the Greater Manchester area. The prison opened in June 1868. in 1963 it was decided that the prison would no longer hold women prisoners, and in 1980 it began to accept remand prisoners.

Following a major disturbance in 1990, the prison was re-built, and the running and management of the prison was put out to tender. The Prison Service won the contract and re-opened the prison in 1994. The prison was again put out to tender and the Prison Service won the contract again in 2001. In early 2003 HMP Manchester became part of the High Security Estate.

No demo actually took place

25.05.2009 11:00

No actual demonstration actually took place. 7 people in total turned up, most at 1.20pm and then, promptly buggered off.

it was sad and pathetic but typical of the British left and the state of politics in Britain today. at 1pm there were more coppers, two than 'protestors' - one.

at least three of the four have now been moved to Belmarsh.
