After the shocking news that Babi Badalov was snatched yesterday, ( http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2008/09/408869.html ) today saw an overwhelming show of support from friends and supporters of his campaign at a protest outside the UK Border Agency offices in Cardiff.
Babi was kept in Rumney Police Station overnight but is expected to be moved to Campsfield Detention Centre at some point Wednesday night, or early Thursday morning. We have been led to believe that the UK Border Agency intend to deport him to Azerbaijan on Saturday 20th September, although Babi has still yet to receive official deportation directions. We will be doing everything in our power to stop any deportation from happening, please show your support by doing the same.
Over 50 people gathered outside the place where Babi was grabbed 24 short hours earlier, holding banners and placards. Amongst the were Leanne Wood AM, deputy leader of Cardiff Council Neil McEvoy, as well as many of Babi’s closest friends.
After the protest a number of friends went up to Rumney police station and were able to pass a card to Babi containing messages of support. While no ones was allowed in to see him on this occasion, we did manage to speak to him during the protest as well as later in the day. He was clearly uplifted by all the support that he has received. However, overall, he is still very low. He remains extremely frightened about the prospect of being deported and his incarceration is clearly having an effect on his increasingly fragile mental health.
