Sequani demo

lynn Sawyer | 08.09.2008 13:10 | Stop Sequani Animal Testing | Animal Liberation | Repression

A brief summary of Saturdays events

Two hundred activists marched through Ledbury despite roads and railway tracks being badly flooded.
FIT were kept at bay by Fitwatch
Hundreds of leaflets were given out
Some locals went on the march and voiced support
There was an impromptu demo at Sequani clinical.
The Ledbury hunt was sabbed prior to the demo.
It was made clear to Sequani, police and government that imprisoning fellow activists for peaceful protest will not frighten off other activists from their duties towards animals or to the notion of a right to protest.
Afterwards.
A Foie Gras demo' took place in Worcester
A shift change at Cargill/Sun Valley, in Hereford (a chicken abbatoir which supplies Mc Donalds) was disrupted as security refused to let workers in and they drove around aimlessly for an hour.
The notorious Bobby Roberts Circus (due to start performances tommorrow night at Hereford race course) had their posters reaaranged.
There was another demo at the gates this morning
The police have conceded (in private to various activists) that we outwitted them despite being equal in number.

There were 5 arrests with the last arrestee taken home at 22.30.

In my humble opinion all those present did a good job. The paragons of virtue who have spread poison about activists involved in the day may of course wish to show everyone how "proper" animal rights activists should be campaigning and I for one look forward to being overshadowed by their sheer brilliance. As mere mortals those of us in this area will continue to do to the best of our (admittedly mediocre) ability to do what we feel is right using tactics we are morally comfortable with.

Top Notch

08.09.2008 13:37

Well done i did try to chase news of the action via the internet on the day, but found only a small release by the hereford times which seriously understated both numbers and activist actions.

Once again good job.

stop the spin

08.09.2008 13:56

I was there, this is just crap, there was about 60 which grew to probably about 150 maybe a little more and that's just rubbish after all the publicity. This spin to cover what was a disaster for the animal movement just wastes everybody's time and hides the real issue of falling support for the issue.

I came home really pissed off and I haven't changed my mind since then. I don't know what to do but writing articles on IndyMedia saying it was a success is not it.

A really pissed off participant

Oh come on....

08.09.2008 14:08

"Overall though I definitely think it was well worth it!"

Worth what for f****s sake?! It succeeded in changing absolutely nothing. It was a complete waste of time. I absolutely despair at how the anti-vivisection 'movement' has degenerated into the joke it has become today. How the vivisectors and their drug industry-paymasters must be laughing at your antics!

In fact, I am starting to wonder whether the rise of this so-called militant animal rights movement isn't just another tentacle of the vivisection industry purposely formed to infiltrate the more excitable elements of the animal rights movement - just as the BUAV and co have long been infiltrated in order to keep the more sedate members of said 'movement' inactive by deliberately engaging them in useless camapigns against cosmetic testing etc.

Anything to keep people away from talking about the scientific nulility of vivisection.

At the risk of boring myself to death, as well as regulars here, I will repeat it once more: vivisection exists because most people believe that it helps to save human lives. They will always put their moral feelings towards animals at the back of their mind and see animals endure the torments of hell so long as that elusive promise of a cure for cancer is dangled in front of their noses.

Here's a clue: on the front page of national paper yesterday was the headline 'Once and for all flu jab - UK trials begin on super vaccine to protect against all strains with a lifetime injection'. On page 7 was a full page article entitled 'Herbal hazards that could threaten the unborn child'.

Despite the fact that the flu jab has recently been proven to save no-one, and pharmaceuticals kill tens of thousands annually, and herbal remedies kill nobody at all, newspapers continue to circulate this crap. THIS IS WHY VIVISECTION EXISTS!!

Rather than plodding through the rain soaked streets of Ledbury, and no doubt alienating the vast proportion of the public in the process, you would have advanced the AV movement much more by spending a day leafleting the public as to the criminal actions of the drugs industry, the millions of human deaths and injures brought about by the products of the vivisection laboratory, and the murder of millions of animals used as a scapegoat when drug industry poisons kill and injure people, although admitedly this would have been much less exciting.

HLS shows no sign of closing, the Oxford lab camapaign has been a total failure, and vivisection continues into the 21st century unabated; all failures due to campaigners' refusing to think for themselves and not doing what has to be done

What is desperately needed is a full frontal front attack on vivisection using the intellect; to educate the whole nation that vivisection exists ONLY to make money for a pharmaceutical industry that is happy to march across a mountain of corpses - both human and animal - in its obscene search for more profits. Only when enough people have been woken up from the slumber they are currently happy to exist within will vivisection ever stand a chance of being finished off; regretably to say this including the vast majority of current campaigners.

Is there anyone who is able to understand this and has the guts to break away from the current herd-like mentality that will see vivisection continue until the end of time?

Steve

Excellent...

For all those who complained about the Carnival, these actions would not have taken place if not for these activists being around on the day. Creative thinking by activists whilst all the coppers eyes were on us at the Carnival - well done!

It's just a copy & paste from:  http://indymedia.org.uk/en/2008/09/408251.html?c=on#c203323

It might make sense if they weren't replying to a quote Lynn didn't infact make, because it was obviously made on the previous article.

Steve you are boring the tits off everyone, I rue the day when your copy and paste function packs up on your PC. Accept that people should campaign in the way they feel happy. As someone else posted previously, your method of campaigning has hardly shown any success in current or past years so please feel free to continue handing out leaflets - if vivisection ends because of public opinion I will eat my own face.

Overall a good day I think, and a vital action that shows that if the police try to oppress and stop actions they will be left in the dark and we will get the better of them.

When I first got involved in the movement people used to say that the enemy is the vivisector and not the policeman, but as far as I can see now the police are stopping us from getting to the goal of stopping the vivisector. Don't give the police anything, you don't give the vivisector anything!

Sequani Perkin up a bit?

More would come if billed as less militant

08.09.2008 15:31

I think the no organisers thing is a good idea but I think what put more people off attending is all the talk of 'everyone wear masks', eveyone wear black, etc. That's what put me off attending. The people who want to do that will. Wouldn't I be right to say, the more the better is always helpful on a demo.

Re: Ted

The only reason people would have been deterred is because it's the first event of it's kind, so nobody is really sure what to expect and some will naturally feel uncomfortable about this. Now that the AR movement has learnt how an event with no organisers works, and how much more effective it is, I'm sure the numbers will be doubled, if not tripled for the next one.

In comparison (and absoloutely no offence to the SmashEDO campaign) the numbers were very impressive given that the first non-organised stand against the arms dealers in Brighton (EDO) only had 40 people turn up. More importantly though numbers increased over the years to 400. It took the quite a few events, but they got eventually got results, as now one of the factories has closed, with the other due to close pretty shortly I imagine.

People will realise they only have to get involved in what they feel comfortable with, and that more importantly it makes sense, otherwise they wouldn't be in the movement in the first place. Afterall, SSAT/SHAC support the ALF/animal rights prisoners, and both groups have overwhelming support from the AV movement, if not most of the support along with SPEAK. If people don't want to get involved directly with whats going on thats fine, but it doesn't mean they have to walk ayway as events unfold that (given happened over night) they would support anyway. Or at least the groups they support, are supportive of, so it's not that much different.

Good to hear an honest appraisal

08.09.2008 18:18

It was good to hear an honest appraisal of the days events and that many of the animal exploiters in the area also receievd some attention. Too often it's claimed that AV protesters only care about vivisection, (a retarded thing to say I know), so it's good to hear.

To everyone involved,

Well Done

Where was the cubbing?

08.09.2008 18:33

Lynn/Anyone,

Can you please provide details of where the Ledbury hunt were caught cubbing on saturday? Could prove useful to know for next year.

Sab

sabbing

09.09.2008 09:16

A sab group who know the area and the local hunts very very well had planned a sab prior to attending the demo'. The meet was known about beforehand by the group who decided to make a day of it and were up and about very early indeed. An example to us all methinks

Pass info to LACS

09.09.2008 12:07

If you have any video of the cub hunting by Ledbury Hunt please send it to LACS so they can see about a prosecution. Ledbury will have a hard time explainign why they are training their hounds with foxes if they don't actually plan on hunting the foxes come November.
