Smash EDO Carnival Against the Arms Trade

Davy Jones | 28.05.2008 22:36 | Smash EDO | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Palestine | South Coast

Every bomb that is dropped and every bullet that is fired in the name of this war of terror has to be made somewhere and wherever that is it can be resisted...

On the 4th June, Smash EDO, a campaign group aiming to shut down EDO MBM, a Brighton based arms manufacturer, will be holding a Carnival Against the Arms Trade aiming to highlight the level of public opposition to the factory and be an oppurtunity to take creative direct action against the arms trade.

The Carnival will include live music, a critical mass and with a unifying theme of red. Smash EDO are calling for activists to come from around the country to join the carnival and help close down EDO.

ITT/EDO MBM are a unit of a US corporation manufacturing weapons by the US and UK armed forces in Iraq and the Israeli army in Palestine. Smash EDO are residents of Brighton who came together to resist the war in Iraq and the occupation of Palestine. People in Brighton were sickened to learn that a company in their home town was not only profiting from, but making possible the illegal and immoral slaughter in Iraq. Smash EDO is a grassroots response to EDO's complicity in murderous crimes - a banner under which people opposed to those crimes can rally.

As the UK government blindly follows the US regime, citizens of the UK have a special responsibility to prevent crimes around the world being committed in our name, with our taxes, with weapons built in our communities.

EDO are running scared - having spent millions of pounds trying to silence activists through the courts. Dozens of the directors of EDO MBM have resigned due to the four year long direct action campaign and EDO has closed down part of its operation in Brighton. In December 2007 EDO Corporation was sold to ITT - It remains to be seen whether the businessin Brighton will continue.
