St Georges' Day, Market Square, Nottingham

23rd April is St. Georges' Day. A day that has, up to now, been hijacked by assorted right-wing nasties. But, in the Market Square today, there was a small gathering and event that I enjoyed hugely.

Well, I suppose it depends on your musical tastes I guess.

Wynndebagge and The New St George Waits, purveyors of medieval rock'nroll. Wynndebagge (bagpipes, banter, hurdy-gurdy, woodwinds and gittern) have played in a number of outfits (that's costumes and bands!), one of the first being The Baggettes, a medieval good-time party band - weddings, hanging, floggings, ritual disembowellings, in fact any cause of public celebration. Then in 2002 English Heritage commissioned wynndebagge to provide a band to celebrate England's patron saint day and The New St George Waits was born. Nottingham has now heard from them.

Right wing nasties

They were out in force outside the Pheasant Inn in Radford all afternoon. A rally of lots of white people with not much hair in England football shirts chanting "Ing-ur-lund, Ing-ur-lund, Ing-ur-land" in the middle of a multi-ethnic community. If that's not right wing provocation I don't know what is.

About The New St George Waits

Thank you to Nottingham for having The New St George Waits as part of the celebration. Just to clarify, the refrence to hangings, floggings and ritual disembowellings makes us sound a bit like the nasties that Tash is referring to. In fact it is a medieval joke along the lines of "available for weddings, birthdays and barmitzvahs" The music that we play crosses all ages, borders and boundaries from the 12th to the 21st century. The New St George is a people's champion from the eponymous Richard Thompson song. We enjoy spirited and kindly community and environmental celebrations and festivals. So thanks to Nottingham for having us and we hope to return soon.
Peace, wynndebagge and The New St George Waits. PS Excellent photos Tash
