Politicians: is it one rule for us and another for them? - part II

GW | 10.10.2007 22:57 | Other Press | Repression | London

Watch senior MPs squirm when it is suggested to them that lying by politicians be made illegal.

Tonight's Newsnight included a preview of a BBC2 documentary tomorrow asking why there is no redress against lies or defamation by an elected MP, except by other MPs under such structures as exist.

The reactions of various senior MPs asked were telling. Jack Straw and George Osborne feature.

Podcast of this edition of Newsnight not yet up at time of writing, usually available until tomorrow night's. Or watch:

THE MINISTRY OF TRUTH
BBC Two: Thu 11 Oct 7pm-8pm
Showing to accompany the 10 Why Democracy? films, Richard Symons' documentary examines the fact that people can't always rely on their elected representatives to tell the truth. But what if it was illegal for politicians to lie?

Why Democracy ?

Tonight we will take a meaningful peek into the world of Politics and also at the fact that a law DOESNT EXIST for politicians being held accountable for lying to the public. There has NEVER been a law for politicians misleading the electorate or even on how they should be held accountable for lying, whereas companies and individuals abide by this law everyday.

Generally the press is the only method of exposure. We can change this.

Being involved in the program, I have animated all of the cartoon sections of the documentary, and have had the opportunity to work with the director Richard Symons, who has asked such a revolutionary question, and had the cheek to interview politicians, some of who looked incredibly worried!

Please send a letter to your local MP, and go to the website www.ministry-of-truth,net, where you can ask for your local MP to consider/support the Bill 'The Misrepresentation of the People's Act', which will be tried in parliament on weds 17th october, by MP Adam Price. This will help to ensure the honesty of politicians in the future.

If anybody needs anymore animation btw, please get in contact. ;)

Cheers, and enjoy the programme!

Is it democracy?

What the program shows quite well is the lack of democracy here. In reality we have a serial dictatorship where not even the present all powerful dictator is elected by the people. As just one example of lack of accountability, did you know that under the Royal Prerogative the PM can take us to war without the consent of Parliament or the People?
