St Athan - Campaign against Military Training Centre gains momentum

A campaign to stop the building of St Athan Military Academy, a government pfi scheme involving arms manufacturers and the Open University, is starting to take shape. Read about it below. The next meeting will be on 23 August.

Opposition to the planned military Academy at Saint Athan has at last formed in earnest and the momentum is growing daily. The Welsh Assembly has agreed to a £14 billion government pfi project to allow some of the most infamous weapon industries like Raytheon and Qinetiq to set up a high tech training centre in co-operation with the RAF and the Open University. It will teach young people the latest sophistication in remote mass killing. 'Collateral damage' will be unavoidable.

Stuart Tannock, who is a lecturer at the Social Science Department of the University of Cardiff, has researched the implications of this 'academy'. Download his report by following the link below.

The bait, which Assembly members and councillors have so enthusiastically taken, was the promise of 5,000 jobs to the region. This has already turned out to be a lie, and they have covertly admitted this. Stuart has also collected these admissions.

Come along to a special meeting on 23 August, 5.00pm in the Temple of Peace, Cathay's Park, the main focus of which will be to visit St Athan site. We will have one or two minibuses to take us there by about 6.45. We will then visit the chapel on the restricted military site and have an inspection of what is there and how far the building has progressed.

At the last meeting, a statement of opposition to the plans was agreed:

Remember that Plaid Cymru who claim to be anti-war are 100% in support of the military academy - not a single Plaid Cymru AM has publiclly opposed the academy, the only political party in Wales to oppose St Athan's in their campaign literature in the Assembly elections was Respect.
