use a train you fuckwits

what do you think the camp is all about ?

Jeeeeeeez

no to cars

Car share

03.08.2007 13:40

I know it's not perfect but car sharing is better than traveling by car alone. Maybe some people can not afford the train fare. I do see your point and we should be pushing for cheaper public transport but some times when we have to work in this system we unfortunately expose ourselves to a certain amount of hypocrisy, nobody's perfect, you probably put out some C02 sending your comment and using your computer. I would rather people come by car and learn and take part in the camp than not come at all. At least their not taking a flight. Oh and calling people " Fuck wits " is not a good way to build a social movement.

group transport

03.08.2007 14:51

The offered transport (a largish group in one vehicle) is merely a useful aside in being able to have vital on-the-spot transport down at the camp for carrying equipment, props, etc. Use your imagination. This is extremely difficult to transport by train and won't fit on a bike. I don't own a car, rarely travel by anything other than bike, and live very lightly indeed on this planet. I don't really mind being called a fuckwit, because I think your comment is ill-informed.

Not good enough

03.08.2007 16:19

Everybody thinks their reason for using a car is a good one. Hearing somebody from the CC trying to justify their use of a car when perfectly good public transport exists just sickens me and makes me wonder why I am bothering to go.

This event is just becoming a joke to anybody who cares about our planet

IT'S NOT A CAR!

03.08.2007 17:51

Please don't jump to conclusions. It's a minibus. Which if full will actually emit less C02 per person than your average train, or so the helpful people at last year's carbon counting workshop estimated.

It's an unfortunate compromise, but how do you propose moving the kind of kit we need to make the camp happen if not with privately owned motor vehicles used as minimally as possible?

please tam

Don't be such a puritan. People need to use cars if they have to travel, thats why millions do it. And perhaps people like you can afford the expensive trains but most can't. If we are gonna build a movement of millions against climate change and the capitalist system that caused it I assume it will involve people who drive and, yes, fly on ryanair and easyjet. I'll be at the climate camp, and I will also be flying on ryanair two weeks later. Do I feel hypocritical? NO! Why? Because capitalism doesn't give me any options, thats why I'm against it. Its like saying that anyone that works supports exploitation. get real!

Not gonna come no more

03.08.2007 19:43

Oh well i guess as i am a person who drives a car, buys stuff made by capitalists, watch films funded by Rupert Murdoch's Fox Film, drink corporate beer, sometimes shop in supermarkets when money is tight and i can't get to the expensive organic store, i won't be coming to the camp as a dirty Co2 emitting fuckwit like me will not be welcome. Well done Tam with your attitude BAA does not need a high court injunction to keep the masses away from this event.

Ignore Tam - we're all hypocrites sometimes

04.08.2007 00:08

Its like people (often media) point at out G8 gatherings etc - why are they sleeping in corporate made tents/wearing corporate made hiking boots etc. The answer is simple - we live in a capitalist society. We are trying to suggest solutions, and we also try and provide practical examples of our beliefs as often as we can - but completley avioding the corporate system, as i very much doubt tam does just sets us up for a fall and makes us 100% inacessible to the general public. Heres my ethical/unethical roster

ethical
*grow 75% of veg i eat
*Shop from a small vegan co-operative
*dont drive
*dont take short haul flights
*vegan
*try to buy local products
*freegan/skip dive
*compost
*reuse/recycle

unethical
*will buy from supermarkets when skint
*will bum lifts of car driving friends
*wont rule out the possibility of taking very occasional long haul flights in the future
*i like mangoes- hence buy small amounts from overseas
* I use gas and electric

Does the last list make me a bad person? I like to openley admit to all of the 'unethical' things i do - im not perfect, nor is anyone living under the constraints of this system, and most people who do profess to be perfect are more often than not, frankly, sanctimonious, self important dicks. The best most of us can do is not 'enough'. but we need to work on providing examples of what our world could look like. The more people we convince to lead as ethical a life as possible, the more easy it will become for everyone to be more ethical/sustianable. So, those of you that cant stand proudly atop your pedastals, lording your ethical perfection over the plebs (and i say with no shame that i am one of you), please do come to climate camp, get involved, do all that we can ask of ourselves i.e our best, and dont be put off or let your stay at the camp be ruined by people with the luxury of large wads of time and money who expect you to live up to their unatainably 'high' standards.

See you all at camp!

So if...

05.08.2007 09:09

So if me and some friends did come to the camp in my small KA car with our stuff would we be lynched or cast out from the camp. I do realise the hypocrisy of car travel but unfortunately cost, time and practicalities are against me. This may sound lame i know. I do intend to park the thing and not drive for the duration of the camp and then participate in what i hope will be an amazing, empowering and hopefully life changing experience.

Of course you won't be 'lynched or cast out from the camp' if you bring a car. Lots of people do, for some the only way of getting there. See you at the camp!

Right then I'm going 100%

05.08.2007 17:47

Thanks for the comment Climate Camper. I would not wish to offend people who are very committed to this endeavor, If i have space in my KA i will try to bring me bike. See you at the camp and good luck!
