British Airports Authority running scared over Climate Camp

climate camper | 26.07.2007 08:53 | Climate Chaos | London

"AIRPORT officials are attempting to legally block the heads of two campaign groups and their members from taking part in a week of protests against Heathrow.

"Geraldine Nicholson, chairwoman of No Third Runway Action Group (NoTRAG) and John Stewart, chairman of HACAN Clearskies, both received injunction documents from Heathrow Airport Ltd, part of BAA, one day after both attended a meeting held in Sipson on Thursday (19) to discuss the imminent arrival in the borough of Climate Camp.

"Lawyers for the airport are also seeking to make Mr Stewart, Mrs Nicholson and Leo Murray and Joss Garman from Plane Stupid personally responsible for anyone from their organisations who does get involved in the camp".

Timothy Lawson-Cruttenden?

26.07.2007 19:15

Local activist residents have repeatedly spoken of the ineptitude of BAA's Press Office.

Seems like their legal peeps may be from the same camp. Timothy Lawson-Cruttenden has a disastrous record, having advised EDO in Brighton and nPower at Radley lakes. In both cases these sort of injunctions were issued, in both cases they got appalling press reaction and in both cases they were ultimately defeated.

Hopefully the judges at the High Court will take the same dim view of these tactics as their predecessors.

Labour party try to hijack Climate Camp

26.07.2007 09:16

NOTE TO IMC ADMINS: please do not hide this article again. It's very, very, very important that people know what is happening and to prepare for who else is going to be at the Climate Camp. This is a very big issue as it shows how the Labour Party is trying to influence the camp and control it.

Thanks

John

The local Hayes and Harlington Labour party is attempting to hijack the Heathrow Climate Change camp and use it to try and portray local MP John McDonnell as having organised it.

I live near Heathrow and have been involved in the fight to stop the third runway for some time, the vast majority of local residents are opposed to it and the local MP John McDonnell has jumped on the bandwagon despite the offical Labour party view being that they are in support of the third runway. Now the local party has seen the threat of the Climate Camp and has decided to pretend they are the organisers. They are telling anybody who will listen that this is their idea to show local residents how the local party is fighting for local residents.

I quick call to party headquarters received the following information.

"John McDonnell, together with local people has set up this camp to try and stop the expansion of Heathrow"

"Labour party stewards will be on site to ensure no breach of the peace"

"This will be a well regulated with the police involved to ensure smooth running and no law breaking"

Finaly this week there was an interview with McDonnell in the local paper where after a predictble rant about "working together" and "respecting the needs of holiday makers together with business travellers" he extended his invitation to the camp by saying,

Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington, John McDonnell, said: "We really hope that as many local people as possible will accept our invitation to visit the camp."

Other information:
McDonnell is supported by the RMT union, a union which supports increased transport use at Heathrow

I have sent an email to the Climate Camp website informing them of the intention of the Labour Party to send stewards and sent an email of complaint to McDonnell stating that we don't want his support, don't want his stewards at the camp, don't want police there and don't appreciate his attempts to take it over.

Predictble

26.07.2007 09:38

It's no great surprise that BAA is against linking Carbon via flights with Climate Change if as expected the government increase taxation on aviation fuel BAA could lose revenue.

The bigger questions are of course does Carbon emmisions lead to climate change and how much Carbon is put out by aviation in the world. In addition why have major oil companies around the world been pushing for government taxation on oil usuge ?

A growing body of scientists who have taken the time to investigate the issue and who DO NOT have their funding linked to climate research have identified the many flaws in the theories linking Carbon emmision to climate change. Man of the scientists who names are on the IPCC report are now requested their names are removed as the reports have been shown to be highly innacurate in their conclusions.

The government has been looking for an easy way to label something, anything as responsible for climate change so that it can be easily taxed. The car is already taxed to the hilt, petrol and diesel the same so Carbon was the obvious answer. A series of well leaked dubious reports combined with some idealistic and misinformed activists to give it credibility and we have an easy route to new revenue generation.

The big lie of Peak Oil has already worked allowing oil companies to inflate their prices through a non exsistent shortage of crude oil, the well funded campaigns by the likes of Greenpeace (ever wondered how they can afford ships, offices in every major capital city and a vast worldwide organisation ?) have seen massive profits for the major oil companies. Now it's the turn of Western governments to get the noses in the trough. I bet there is much laughter in Whitehall as they see us doing their jobs for them.

I will still attend the Climate Camp because there are issues to be bought up about sustainable living and food production but Carbon driven climate change is just a load of ballony and I am not going to allow it to be used as another tax raising excuse so the Labout party can spend the money on new weapons and imperial adventures overseas.

Big up the points by John Pearson

26.07.2007 09:47

Pissed off to see John Pearson's comment hidden. The local Labour party infiltration of the Climate camp is one a lot of us have been noticing. The story about Labour Party stewards coming along was also bought up at the meeting on Saturday but was quickly shouted down by a small group that nobody had seen before. Regretfully the meeting then moved on to other subjects.

We have already noticed unmarked cops near where the site is going to be so the venue is obviously busted now we have an attempt to make an authorised Labour party event. Not good.

THIS NEEDS TO BE TALKED ABOUT

If things wern't so shit here....

Control by the State for the State

26.07.2007 15:46

I see from the hidden comments that the local labour party is trying to control the camp. No great surprise the State machine has a history of watching growing protest groups and then taking them over when they start to make a difference. Look at CND, Greenpeace, the Green Party and Stop the War. All of them muffled and strangled because they started to make real change possible.

In 2008 Climate Camp will probably end up with corporate sponsorship and an entrance charge

Liz

Who signed the injunction?

So it's TLC again.

Who was the judge who signed the injunction?

Thanks For The Publicity BAA

27.07.2007 07:07

BAA's bizarre decision to serve injunctions on a random and largely unconnected group of individuals and groups in an attempt to stop the Climate Camp has already begun to bear excellent fruit. Someone called John Stewart popped up on the Today Programme to point out the strangeness of it all. Lets all make as much out of this as possible - thanks to BAA, the Climate Camp can be even bigger! (By the way, what exactly is Plane Stupid? I've never heard of it ;-)
