The main task of the committee will be to formulate proposals on the EU's future integrated policy on climate change and to coordinate the European Parliament's position with a view to negotiating the international framework for climate policy post-Kyoto. Its mandate will stretch over twelve months, beginning on 10 May this year, and at the end of the term of office it shall present a report to the Parliament with recommendations for actions to be taken by the Community.
The committee will have 60 Members spread across the political groups and the GUE/NGL group will be given three full seats.

Swedish GUE/NGL MEP Jens Holm and member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety expressed his satisfaction with the decision:
