Support your local Post Office - Rally

Sarah Lee | 16.02.2007 08:30 | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements

We are staging our rally to tell the Government two things: firstly, the Government has removed hundreds of millions of pounds of business from Post Offices in recent years, including the TV licences contract, so it is little wonder that viability is a problem. Secondly, economic concerns are only part of the bigger picture. Post Offices provide the social heart of many communities, and without them many thousands of people, including many elderly and disabled, would be increasingly isolated. Government must look at the bigger picture before deciding the fate of many of our local communities.

Support your local Post Office - Rally

The rally in Winchester will take place on Friday 23rd February at 12-2pm, Winchester Crown Post Office.

The rally in Creaton will take place on Monday 19th February at 9am, Creaton Post Office, Creaton, Northamptonshire. Philip Hollobone MP will be addressing the crowd.

The rally is part of National Post Office week, which has been organised by the umbrella group "Future for our Post Office", of which the Countryside Alliance is a part, and starts on Monday 19th February. This local event is one of a series taking place across the UK, including a mass rally and lobby of Parliament to be held on Tuesday 20th February 1-3.30pm at Methodist Central Hall in Westminster. Alliance Chief Executive Simon Hart will address this rally, as will the Prime Minister's Rural Advocate, Dr Stuart Burgess. The week of action aims to highlight the current Government consultation on the future of the Post Office network and encourage people to take part to fight for their own local service.

So a show of support for our threatened network has never been more vital. If you require more information on the rally please contact  sarah-lee@countryside-alliance.org
