The rare Lady's slipper orchid and the highest incidence per square metre of Pyrimadal orchids have been ploughed up.
The link below shows the secret location of the site were the UK's rarest orchid grew. The field originally owned by the now deceased solicitor Kevin Dooley and his partners in the ill fated gas extraction plant at Cut Lane Knowsley. In the years since the field has been fallow and the orchid came up every summer. As did the large quantity of Pyramidal Orchids. But the Lad'ys slipper is no ordinary orchid.Another one believed to be located near Lancaster was recently damaged by vandals,Who probably knew no better. But you would imagine a farmer would know better?
Recently the field was leased out to farmer James Hayes. He promptly deep ploughed it.The Lady's slipper Orchid must have a rare and yet still unidentified fungus present to grow. This ploughing has destroyed not only the orchids but the rare fungus too.Information regarding this Orchid was published on the local Knowsly website "The Kirkby Times".Now the liverpooltimes.net.It may not seem much but this small flower had the capability to attract some of the worlds leading botanists, not to mention gardening tourists. Some thing irreplacable has gone. And it may even be the extinction of the UK species.
