These posts are from a Brighton based activist spending part of October in occupied Palestine with the International Solidarity Movement, a network of international activists set up to support Palestinian non violent resistance agaisnst Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. In these posts I will be writing short accounts of aspects of the occupation and resistance…

In October I will also be trying to foster grassroots links with grassroots organisations in the Jordan valley region, the most fertile area of the West Bank in danger of annexation by the Israeli state suffering from exploitation by Israeli and international corporations...

As I arrived in Jerusalem yesterday some of the worst internal conflict since Hamas gained power was unfolding in Gaza. Hamas security forces met disruption caused by, mostly Fatah, strikers with violence leading to eight deaths, two of them children.

Retaliations were felt all over Palestine with several government buildings attacked.

Monday saw a further day of strikes against the security forces' actions and the withholding of pay for state employees since the EU and US placed sanctions on the democratically elected Hamas government. One man was shot in Jericho while participating in the strike.

I passed several closed government buildings in Ramallah today. Most shops in Ramallah were also closed.

At the same time Israel has enforced closures in the West Bank due to the Yom Kippur holiday. Several roads around Jerusalem were closed with police tape and large numbers of Israeli police were visible in East Jerusalem, Palestinian residents of Hebron were barred from the area surrounding the Ibrahimi mosque to allow illegal Israeli settlers to worship.
