richard branson has pledged $3 billion to combat global warming

just got this off guardian unlimited, apparently from the press association, no time to elaborate;

richard branson has pledged to invest $3 billion over the next 10 years to combat global warming and promote alternative energy. the money will come from 100% of the profits generated by his transportation and airline sectors.

Another way of looking at this story is "Businessman invests £1.6 billion from his own company... in his own company."

The main part of the money is going to his own company's research into bio-fuel - research which will no doubt provide the company with hefty profits in the future, particularly when countries start clamouring for alternatives to oil.

So it's not quite the wild philanthropic gesture the posting above suggests.

Still, it's good news and a step in the right direction. Hopefully others will follow suit.

Surely the easiest way to combat global warming is to ditch the airline!

Profits invested into renewable energy..... like wind farms to power his trains? Thats not a charitable gesture thats called investment.

mind you its a baby step in the right direction

"How Does Richard Branson Get Away With It?"

Article on George Monbiot's new website:

Probably needs updating now to include / conclude "because he makes grand but hollow gestures that pretend he cares".

Do these businesses actually make a profit to be invested elsewhere? It's easy to shuffle "investments" around to give the right number in the "profit" column, that's why have so many separate businesses with similar names.

Scuse my Scepticism

Virgin boss says don't fly would really be good news. Investing in alternative fuels is all well and good but its really so the current economic model can carry on with business as usual. climate change and its twin peak oil mean business cannot carry on as usual.
The problem with statements such as bransons is that it allows ordinary people to assume that "they" are sorting the problem out while really its a problem caused by us that can only be fixed by us
