just got this off guardian unlimited, apparently from the press association, no time to elaborate;
richard branson has pledged to invest $3 billion over the next 10 years to combat global warming and promote alternative energy. the money will come from 100% of the profits generated by his transportation and airline sectors.

Another way of looking at this story is "Businessman invests £1.6 billion from his own company... in his own company."
The main part of the money is going to his own company's research into bio-fuel - research which will no doubt provide the company with hefty profits in the future, particularly when countries start clamouring for alternatives to oil.
So it's not quite the wild philanthropic gesture the posting above suggests.
Still, it's good news and a step in the right direction. Hopefully others will follow suit.
