Every age and every place spawns mindless extremists who are too
lazy to think for themselves. In England in 2006 the new Nazis are
generally middle-class soap-dodgers who claim to be vegan and anti-
racist etc etc.

This evening two such stormtroopers of unreason informed me that I
am a murderer because I eat meat, and also that the life of a fly is
worth as much as the life of a human child. They also informed me
that eating meat is akin to racism as it is speciesism.

The really sad thing was that they were completely serious.

These people are not mere lunatics. They are the fascists of the
future.

If this shit is what lies at the heart of the counterculture then
give me the mainstream anyday.

The fly=baby thing is daft but the specism argument is a valid one and it is a prejudice just like racism with arguably just as much misery caused through it - even 'dumb animals' can feel pain, fear and discomfort. Millions are raised and slaughtered for our use and most of us haven't a clue in what conditions they were born, lived or died.

On the fly=baby thing, we can understand it on the levels of consciousness. Therefore maybe 1,000,000 flies = 1 baby. Then again you could argue on the basis of the feelings of other conscious beings like parents and stuff. So maybe forget flies.

But an adult dolphin has the intelligence of a seven year old, so in case of starvation and given the choice between adult dolphin and human baby, you should eat the baby first. Unless you're being specist, in which case you'll eat the dolphin. Unless you're, like, committed to not eating anyone else - in which case you starve to death.

In more likely circumstances, free range meat and an awareness of the issue should be accepted as 'doing your bit'. Vegetarianism or veganism is a fine thing to consider but the extremism thing is not needed cos we can all get extreme and shouty an all that and it don't help and we end up blowing shit up like George Bush - kaboooom!!! Tony Blair - kaboooom!!! Steve Rider - kaboooom!!! all fun in the beginning and then it ends in tears etc etc


*if they are doing that then it's a bit on top, I'd agree.

dear cobblers apart from being an inarticulate loudmouth you are clealy
unable to think for yourself and are merely following a stylised
agenda of not actually addressing the points raised by steve
withington/carlos barcode.this is typical of the people that
tolerate the lunatic element that steve criticises in his
blog.remember iam not the author of
this blog i merely agree with every word steve says.and what has you
not knowing who steve/carlos is got to do with the points me makes

And what was the point of that exactly...? I am not vegan or vegetarian but do think there are some good arguments to be had over whether specism is a prejudice that blinds the majority to the suffering of animals. I also agree that extremism is bad, whether Nazi's or Religious Fundementalists or Fundementalist Vegans - however I would argue that they should be tolerated if they are not actually trying to behead you or gas you or feed you lentils till you explode. KaBoooooommmm....!!!

Aye, thanks Steve my old chum. Being the son of an Innuit father and an Aboriginal Australian mother I strongly resent being accused of being anti-immigration.
That said I am more worried by people who try to quantify the value of human life in terms of numbers of flies than I am by people who stand for border control.
