The Rides of Silence in the UK are part of a global Ride of Silence, started in the USA in 2003.

17th May 2006. Despite rain and the lure of football, 30 or more people turned out for the cycle ride, which commemorated the deaths of three cyclists, Apijak Srivanavit, Harriet Tory and Jason Wong. Rain made videoing some parts of the ride difficult, hence the missing bits.

For full information see:  http://www.rideofsilence.org.uk/

"The Ride of Silence is a silent bicycle ride intended to commemorate and honour cyclists killed and injured by motor vehicles. It is also intended to raise awareness of cyclists and cycling, and assert our right to be able to share the roads safely without fear of death and injury.

Rides should be conducted in silence as far as possible. All participants should try to wear a black armband, or alternatively a red armband if they have personally been injured by a motor vehicle. It is not intended to be a traditional protest: wear your normal clothes and do not bring banners or other protest materials. The power of the event is in the silence of the participants..."
