100th soldier vigil in Leeds

Leeds Coalition Against the War | 31.01.2006 14:54 | Anti-militarism

Vigil in Dortmund Square, Leeds, from 5.30pm tomorrow evening, Wednesday 1 Feb, to mark the death of 100 British soldiers in Iraq. Called by Leeds Coalition Against the War

We will be joined by Peter Brierley of Military Families Against the War, a local man from Batley whose son was one of those 100 soldiers. He believes that our troops should never have been in Iraq in the first place, that the war was illegal and that our troops stationed there now should be brought home. Whereas records have been made of each soldier to die, the number of Iraqi victims of the war and occupation is unknown, but estimates of over 100,000 would seem closer to the truth.

We wil wear black ribbons in memory of the dead soldiers, and to show respect for their families and friends who have lost loved ones. A wreath will later be laid at the Cenotaph on the Headrow.
