Breaking News: Afghanistan

Paul | 14.11.2005 14:08 | Oxford

So now we have got democracy in Afghanistan. As I write this I am sitting in my office in Jalalabad road, Kabul about 400 metres from the electoral compound where there have been the largest attacks in Kabul for about 18 months.

Below is the latest security brief we have received. As I write this I am sitting in my office in Jalalabad road about 400 metres from the electoral compound where there was an electrically controlled bomb and then later a car bomb. News keeps changing but latest is that 10 people were killed and most ISAF but this could change soon. We have been ordered to stay in our office waiting for the all clear.

Attacks have risen significantly in the last year but Kabul has seen little of them due to the tight security around the city. This makes it even more significant that these attacks happened. The elections as predicted have brought more violence and there will be a lot more to come. An early cold winter is the best chance to limit this. The parliament has been finalized which means a lot of upset people and the majority of the parliament majadeen and illiterate. Another American success story.
