Post Indymedia - a future
Ruth | 31.10.2005 12:20
As the UK indymedia site continues lose ever more respect (and readers) in the anarchist / activist / Left world, a group of us is trying to analyse where it all went wrong so we can learn the lessons and get it right next time.
A public meeting is going to be held on Saturday the 12th of November at the Use Your Loaf Centre For Social Solidarity, 227 Deptford High St, SE14. The meeting starts at 7.30 and will be entitled "Post Indymedia - where now ?"
Most people seem to be focusing on the so called Editorial Policy which has enabled the six or seven regular "Moderators" to control the output and push their view of the world but the problems are bigger than that with a recognition that maybe we should be embracing a wider field of opinion. We are not setting any form of agenda or "correct" ideas just opening up the discussion and hoping to establish a "new" Indymedia UK which is representitive of the true community rather than a small group. All contributions and peeps are welcome and on the night computer equipment will be available to enable us to get started on the project.
We hope you will join us and creating a new start.
Love, Respect and A New World

A legitimate post on a subject that interests some people concerning an event. No rules have been broken and yet you hid it (and so fast as well !) The very act of hiding this post shows how bad things have become
I bet you can't answer me or will dare to post this up

The building was re-occupied but:
"At six-thirty on Friday morning (3rd Sept) about thirty bailiffs and riot cops smashed their way through the front door of Use Your Loaf and seized possession of the building on Deptford High Street, which had been occupied as a centre for social solidarity since summer 2002. There were no arrests and the collective say they will be squatting a new building in the near future. http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2004/08/296935.html"

The Indymedia post from 2004 was accurate at the time but the centre was reopended a few weeks later after agreement with the council. A later post was put up on the subject so maybe someone can find it in the Indymedia archives.
I checked with some of the guys I know at the centre and this meeting is booked 7.00 to 11.30,
hope this is of some help

Technical details of permanent failure:

Now isn't that a surprise!!!!!!
"The Indymedia post from 2004 was accurate at the time but the centre was reopended a few weeks later after agreement with the council. A later post was put up on the subject so maybe someone can find it in the Indymedia archives."
So, the Council agreed that you could use a building that belongs to an overseas investment company?
Thats amazing!
"I checked with some of the guys I know at the centre and this meeting is booked 7.00 to 11.30,"
Good, if they get in touch with Indymedia and confirm we can unhide it. Or you could give us the centres phone number.
"The centre was closed but is now open again although it has been kept low profile"
Aah, I see, having obtained permission from the council to use a privately owned building, they thought it best to keep a low profile!!!!
Anybody who turns up to this meeting is in for a nasty surprise.

Also the use your loaf info line funnily enough doesnt work either.
So yep, this is pretty much concluded as disinformation (aside from the fact that the twenty or so people who did in fact start indymedia in this country can be accounted for and are not part of any group who are seeking to hold this so called beyond indymedia meeting).
Ho hum, more disinfo, fake meetings, 'small group who represent the majority trying to hold a meeting about the take over of their group' type crap, as seen with other campaigns. Luckily people can get to the bottom of it.

Indymedia - a great site that could be brillient if only it allowd itself!

To see how Indymedia can operate in a more open way just check out the USA, South American and Australian Indymedia sites - your be suprised how interesting they are because they allow linking to other news articles and dont bar news from socailist/liberal and progresssive sites using the hirarchy guidline clause, and are so much better for it!
Surely any progressive site that belives in this "A network of individuals, independent and alternative media activists and organisations, offering grassroots, non-corporate, non-commercial coverage of important social and political issues" should do all it can to support small blogs and web sites that are also trying to inform people of progressive action and news.

A Socialist (sorry to use that word) supporter of Indymedia that wants to see it grow , be the No1 UK progressive site (is it already too late?) and be "more" open.
