National Fishing Week

fisher of men | 12.08.2005 07:11

Fun for all

National Fishing Week 2005 is an opportunity to introduce new people to angling and is supported by a wide range of famous names from tackle manufacturers to TV stars. National Fishing Week will attempt to attract up to 200,000 first time or 'lapsed' anglers to join Britain's four million regular anglers. It will particularly try to attract young people, women, the disabled, pensioners and ethnic groups to the sport in a push which ties in with the Government's ambitions to encourage people to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle. Angling supports those aims because it gets people out of doors, gives them a hobby they can enjoy in the countryside and helps them relax in what is becoming an increasingly stressful society.

If you want to go fishing, and you need to know where to go, log onto the National Fishing Week 2005 website. Whether you want to try Coarse, Sea, or Game fishing the site has information on your nearest events. Many of the events will provide expert tuition from the country's leading licensed coaches and the majority will offer easy access from road and public transport. Many also cater for people with disabilities.

FISHING IS CRUEL!

12.08.2005 07:49

"Between 1976 and 1979, the RSPCA sponsored an inquiry into angling and shooting, published as the Medway Report. The Report concluded that all vertebrates (animals with backbones) including fish, are able to experience pain to one degree or another. They also agreed that there is no reason to differentiate between warm-blooded and cold-blooded creatures (fish are cold-blooded). The Report added that angling inflicts injury, causes pain and trauma to the fish and even if the fish is to be returned to the water, death can still result from handling. Even when using wet hands an angler will remove the protective outer mucous layer, leaving the fish open to infection when returned to the water."

eat the rich

I like to occasionally fish to eat. Mind you I also have no qualms about killing goats for meat - it's certainly less cruel than dairy and other battery produce. Its funny but I am sure a fish and vegetable diet with the odd bit of goat is better than doing a load of dairy products - but then agriculture, sustainability, geography, and population are all important factors. In this country you could quite easily be vegan whereas say in Mongolia you would starve to death - but then we ship a shitload of rice and bean cash crops into this country. There are plenty of fish dying out for various reasons e.g. factory fishing, bourgeois diet changes, pollution so that Ling, Monkfish etc should be avoided if you bothered about species diversity
( London fishmongers and their ( now ) rich customers do not tend to be ) .

Oh - I predict this may go into another Indybore debate/troll etc. etc.

Just because fish don't scream doesn't mean it's not murder!

I think the point is, if its a "sport" which knowingly causes pain and suffering to the creature, then its a wee bit sadistic. i suppose if youre gonna eat what you catch, then at least it dies for a porpoise, err purpose.

Anyway if you want a FUN sport, try twatting a lion with a flimsy spear. Now thats something id pay to watch:)
