30 women on hungerstrike

Chiara | 27.07.2005 18:50

About 30 women from Uganda have gone on hungerstrike in Yarl's Wood detention centre against deportations to Uganda and in protest against the treatment received in Yarl's Wood.

They say Uganda is a dangerous place to be deported to. Some of the women have been raped and tortured, some became infected with HIV after being raped. Rape and torture are common weapons against political dissidents in Uganda.

The women complain against racism in YW, some of the guards allegedly called them 'black monkeys' and told them they should not be here.

Most of the women want to return to Uganda as they love thier country, but not now because they believe it is not safe. Many of them have got removal directions issued, they perceive they have been targeted.

I'm sorry but I have no sympathy whatsoever for these Ugandan women, who chose not only to leave their own country but to leave their roots, family, neighbours, friends and even the African continent itself.

I ask why would these individuals specifically target white Anglo-Saxon Britain and not elect to enter a neigbouring African country?

My guess is that the UK's renowned laxness in accepting anyone from anywhere and with any excuse, prompted each and every woman now on hunger strike.

I sincerely hope they their cases are dealt with expediately and they are returned from whence they came.
