Several hundred people joined this years Sharrow Lantern Carnival which took music and dancing to the streets of Sharrow before a grand finale in the park off Cemetery Road.

The theme of this years carnival was 'the world you want to see' which left lantern makers pretty open to design almost anything nice. The biggest lantern was a huge globe which was carried in several segments on the carnvial before being assembled in the park at the finale.

Although not overtly political several people said it had the feel of Sheffield Reclaim the Streets party in 1997.

The Sheffield Samba band provided a soundtrack for the carnival whilst dancers and costume makers added dancing and cool costumes.

this brings us onto the lantern parade.. we got the propaganda up and it looked good.. we then watched them gather.. getting to thinking is there any real point in this intervention?.. one of us left feeling naked, wasted and alone after a long day.. there was some joy.. this joy was not born out of being postive.. there is plenty to be said about the lantern parade.. but what the hell would be any real point you ask yourself?

the other one of us felt more cheery about the whole event... was there last year and, on balance, this year's was an improvement. thought it was a nice couple of hours thing to watch and wander along with. you sometimes have to be objectional about these things but for those who put a lot of energy into their involvement in the lantern thing, well, you can't fault them for having such a love-in with the do they put on. no-one made us feel left out for not having a lantern or for dressing boringly so why should us two bother them?

so, using the balance thing again, it was a positive event at the end of a long day for us and an even longer few days for the lanterneers. we did hear some criticism from locals on london road (which is what we were on the look out for) but the best bit for me was when the parade wandered through the lansdowne estate giving people chance to look out of their balconies, and this year of them few did..
