A waste of precious time.

To spend time fighting for animal rights is turning your back on the suffering of millions of people that would benefit if you redirected your activism towards their plight.

Mischief

The whole point of Indymedia is that people are free to discuss radical ideas which the mainstream media does not represent. The majority of actions carried under the name of The Animal Liberation Front are minor acts of vandalism for example, paint stripper poured onto cars or locks glued. Even at the most extreme level where fire has been used, no person has ever been seriously hurt or killed. What kind of terrorist group has never killed anybody? Terrorists? No. Mischievous? Yes.

Personally, I do not think that ALF actions are the way forward for animal liberation but is it a suprise that when a billion animals a year die in slaughterhouses each year just in this country, people go to such lengths to stop it?

I agree these are just harmless acts.

For example what scientist working to cure cancer could fail to be enthralled by the light hearted antics of ALF activists when they follow his 12 year old daughter home from school and threaten her if her father continues to work with animals. It was also giggles all round as four masked men took the time to surround the car of a lab nurse and shout abuse at her, and of course we all laughed at the happy go lucky way a dead body was dug up - hilarous !

The ALF has set back the cause of Animal Rights by a generation and without doubt enabled the government to get away with using repressive anti-terrorist legislation against peaceful protestors with the full support of the greater public. The rights of animals have been sacrificed at the alter of the political and power trip ambitions of a few individuals.

See also lots more in my report of Swindon Animal Concern's activities during 2003 (which didn't include threatening or intimidating anyone, or following their 12-year old daughter home, or smashing up / setting fire to their car / house / [insert item of chattel here]) -  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2004/02/285404.html

Hopefully a review of 2004 coming soon, when I get time to collate all the information.
