Cambridgeshire FOR Windfarms

levin | 19.09.2004 16:25 | Ecology | Cambridge

On a windy Saturday (18th September) a group of people went to Boxworth to the "Cambridgeshire against Windfarms" exhibition to provide another viewpoint for the visitors.

Although most attending, with a few exceptions, were already against the windfarm to be located between Boxworth and the A14, many motorists passing by honked and gave a "thumbs-up".

Nearly everyone we spoke to expressed the view that they were not against windfarms as such, but believed this proposal was too close to the township, citing noise as the biggest concern.

However, at Yes-2-Wind ( http://www.yes2wind.com) they state that, "Thanks to advances in wind turbine technology, well designed, well sited turbines can be quiet enough to cause no disturbance to people living just a few hundred metres away. At these distances, any noise they do make is usually drowned out by the natural noise of the wind itself in the trees and vegetation. To protect nearby residents from any undue disturbance, proposals to install wind turbines are required to meet strict noise standards."

Hopefully the trip organised for this Thursday (23rd September) by the company who proposed the windfarm (Your Energy) will dispel these concerns.

Congrats to you for the demo from those of us representing the majority in Folkestone
and the surrounding area who are supporting the Romney Marsh windfarm.

(Ours goes to a Public Inquiry starting on 12 Oct at Lydd Airport).

I just hope your goes thru without needing a PI...

Thanks for your support for our proposal, can you organise more?

Yes thank you Charles

It is unfortunate that those representing the Yes2wind campaign don't fully understand what Charles Sandham and his cronies are up to.

Your Energy is an investment company, who's roots are based in the Marshal Islands. Charles Sandham and Your Energy are not in the slightest way interested in Green Energy - their motivation is "Greed Energy."

You see what Charles Sandham and Your Energy do, is spend a few hundred quid on a planning application, which if approved is then sold as a "conecpt" to a power company, who build the wind farm to save themselves from heavy government fines. The amount of power generated by these things is pathetic - its all about subsidy and money.

So you see its not about saving the world and reducing CO2 emmissions, its about making megabucks for Mr Sandham. In fact, at one meeting with local residents he was asked how much money they would make, and reply that followed.

"Stuff that dreams are made of"

You decide?

More support for the Cambridge wind farm

I see Cambridge Green Party have also come out in favour of this proposal:

Irregular noun? "They are cronies, we are concerned citizens, he is a lobbyist."

You sound a bit NIMBY. Could you elaborate, please?

"The energy produced is pathetic"

How much is produced? Does it matter if it displaces fossil fuel use?

"a planning application...is sold as a concept"
Why is this a big deal?

"a power company...saves itself heavy government fines"
Fines for what? How heavy? What's wrong with avoiding fines? I do it by not speeding, for example.

From the greens' letter:
"It is also easier to dismantle wind turbines than to decommission nuclear power stations - a cost which all users of electricity are called upon to bear."
This is a significant factor.

Other impacts:

Something not mentioned here is the damage caused to the nature conserve the turbines will be placed on. The greens had carried out an audit, and referred to the "Full Environmental Impact Assessment". Did these include damage to the local ecosystem?

I notice also that Greenpeace were reserving judgement at that point. It's interesting that not all wind farms are supported by these green groups, but that this one is. It's not often reported that their support is not unconditional.

I am somewhat surprised at the comments made regarding Charles Sandham or anyone else involved in alternative energy supplies.

I recently visited Cornwall and was amazed how many Wind Farms I saw in close proximity from the A30. If we are going to see an increase in these, we are going to need all the help we can get. There are plenty of suitable locations and they need not be an eyesore.

What is wrong with someone making money out of it? Like it or not, we live in a society that is driven by money.

I don't really care how they get built as long as more them (and other similar green initiatives) do get built.
