Bombs out of Brighton – local action against arms dealers

An action camp in Brighton between August 29th and September 2nd endeavoured to put pressure on EDO-MBM, a local arms company which manufactures missile release mechanisms for F16s, which are used extensively in Iraq and the Occupied Palestinian Territories
Activists from Brighton and further afield took part in a number of actions including noise protests, visits to director’s houses, banner drops, visits to local suppliers and contractors and culminated in a rooftop protest at the firm’s Moulscombe factory. It is estimated that the cost to the firm exceeded £20 000 for the week.
The Smash EDO/Bombs out of Brighton Campaign is an ongoing strategy which aims to create local awareness of the company’s activities and to put pressure on the directors and workers to find less lethal ways of making a living.
Taking on huge arms companies like BAE systems and Rolls Royce is a mammoth task made difficult by the enormous resources that they have access to, and local campaigns against more vulnerable links in the chain of supply may well be a more effective way of putting pressure on the arms trade.
The campaign intends to continue targeting the company for as long as they remain active in the arms trade, and hopes to see local campaigns against arms companies and suppliers springing up throughout the country.
