today - 20/08 - is 'capital of culture day' in liverpool.

today liverpool becomes "a giant cultural zone for a mammoth day-long celebration... to celebrate Liverpool’s 2008 European Capital of Culture status on 20/08 (August 20th)."

there's a programme of events focusing on the city centre which - the council website promises - "will be a feast of cultural activity with performances from a whole range of artists, musicians and dancers in the eight dedicated cultural arenas.

it goes on: "The ‘culture zones’ are part of Liverpool city council’s contribution to 20/08. Liverpool City Council Leader Mike Storey said: '20/08 is a day for everyone in Liverpool and across Merseyside to celebrate and share the city’s cultural way of life. These eight cultural zones will bring the city centre alive and give people a taste of how we are looking to bring the city alive over the coming years. I’d urge everyone taking lunch or just shopping or visiting the city, to support the performers and be part of a very special day. There is so much to see and do in Liverpool, and we want as many organisations as possible to come up with creative, original and fun ideas for this special date.'"

*just* shopping??

Simply having some places like LFC stadium tours and the like grant a limited amount of free entry or some vouchers from the 99p store (I kid you not) does not a culture celebration make!
There are some events that are worthwhile but the coporatisation of it even at this early stage does not bode well.

However, it is the fact that they see the city centre as being the only place they can do things. How about a celebration of the communities every 20th August? Oh, just remembered, that would mean they would have to support communities in some shape way or form. Naturally, with this council, "culture" happens only in the city centre, and it has a price tag on it.
