today - 20/08 - is 'capital of culture day' in liverpool.

today liverpool becomes "a giant cultural zone for a mammoth day-long celebration... to celebrate Liverpool’s 2008 European Capital of Culture status on 20/08 (August 20th)."

there's a programme of events focusing on the city centre which - the council website promises - "will be a feast of cultural activity with performances from a whole range of artists, musicians and dancers in the eight dedicated cultural arenas.

it goes on: "The ‘culture zones’ are part of Liverpool city council’s contribution to 20/08. Liverpool City Council Leader Mike Storey said: '20/08 is a day for everyone in Liverpool and across Merseyside to celebrate and share the city’s cultural way of life. These eight cultural zones will bring the city centre alive and give people a taste of how we are looking to bring the city alive over the coming years. I’d urge everyone taking lunch or just shopping or visiting the city, to support the performers and be part of a very special day. There is so much to see and do in Liverpool, and we want as many organisations as possible to come up with creative, original and fun ideas for this special date.'"

*just* shopping??
