Military service in Israel - This is Racism, not the opposite

freddie | 10.07.2004 01:39

The first comment above, by "commentator", quotes admission/nonadmission to military service as evidence against religious/racist discrimination in Israel.

I point out that it is in fact exactly the opposite.

The prohibition of military service by non-jews in Israel is not a BENEFIT to minorities.
It is a clever TOOL for DISCRIMINATION.

This is because all sorts of financial benefits, subsidies and property-related advantages are given only to those who have done military service. This makes it possible to claim that these benefits are not allocated in a discriminatory manner, because the related laws make no such mention. But in FACT no non-jews can qualify, because they cannot do the qualifying military service, however much they want to do so.

I don't think it racist to express impartial admiration for the high degree of planning and organisation which Zionist proponents put into their propaganda efforts, both directly and in publishing detailed guidance for anyone who wishes to take their side.

Linking benefits to religion and race indirectly via military service in this way makes it possible for the propagandist to make these "equal society" claims, which seem convincing to the uninformed. Whilst in fact they are completely spurious.

"Commentator"'s contribution above shows further evidence of this cleverness, by reversing the logic, and presenting this evidence of racist discrimination boldly as evidence of the opposite - as if it is a kindly exemption for non-jews, proving how well they are treated. They are excluded, not excused, and huge disbenefits result.

But it isn't TRUE

"The prohibition of military service by non-jews in Israel is not a BENEFIT to minorities.
It is a clever TOOL for DISCRIMINATION." ---- and the article goes on to explain WHY not being able to serve in the Israeli military is discrimination.

Only one problem, it isn't true.

There isn't a prohibition of military service by non-Jews in Israel -- there's an ethnic/tribal prohibition. Non-Jews aren't REQUIRED to serve in the military, but they are allowed to, and there are plenty of Israeli Bedu and Druze who are in the Israeli military (the Beduins are Moslems and the Druze are either Moslems or Molsem heretics with their own tribal religion depending on whom you ask). Samaritans are allowed to serve if they want (a very samll group, don't think any do) and likewise the Karaites (a somewhat larger group, but I don't know if any do).

"Palestinian" Israelis in general are not allowed to volunteer. But this is a large population and I would not be too quick to assume that there are NONE in the Israeli military.

Mike, I like the way you go to great lengths to try and disprove the statement by pointing out the Bedouin and the Druze, and then basically writing off the Palestinian Israeli's 'Oh, they're not allowed to serve, but apart from them its all good'.

The whole point of the original post is to say that the benefits to be gained by serving in the Israeli army are NOT AVAILABLE to the Palestinian Israelis!!! Because it is the Palestinians who are being dispossessed, not so much the Bedouin and the Druze ( although the plight of Bedouin who try to pursue their traditional nomadic way of life and are forced to move into crime and drug ridden townships is a very real one ).

So there is an inherent racism. Now of course, which Palestinian Israeli would WANT to serve in the Israeli army, and be put into a position where they have to oppress and kill their own people, potentially their relatives. There are many Jewish Israeli's now who refuse to do this, and go to prison for refusing militiary service, and who don't get the benefits gained through being in the army.

So not only is the system racist, it also discriminates against people possessing common decency, and a desire not to inflict pain and suffering on another people, and in fact sends these people to jail.

Not True

Actually, "Palestinian Israelis" or in other words Israeli Arabs can serve in the Israeli army. However, it is not compulsary for them but optional. For Jewish people it is compulsary. It is also optional for the minority groups mentioned such as the Druze but the majority of them choose to do their military service.
