ARGENTINA REBELLION ANNIVERSARY D 19 - 21: Global Piquet

On December 19th and 20th massive mobilizations took place in Buenos Aires, throughout Argentina and around the world, to mark the 1 year anniversary of the popular rebellion in Argentina ousting former President Fernando de la Rua.

In the weeks leading up to the mobilisation, mass media created a climate of tension and fear in preparation for the protests. In the face of this atmosphere, piqueteros, popular assemblies, cacerolazos, alternative media, and human rights activists reclaimed the streets for two days of non-violent actions. Piqueteros, popular assemblies, reoccupied factories, and cacerolazos were convoking actions to celebrate a year of grassroots organizing, alternatives to capitalism, and to continue demands for an end to a system generating a deepening economic crisis.

The piquetero movement was participating in a national march passing through 20 of the 24 Argentine provinces. The National March concluded in the Plaza de Mayo on the 20th of December. Under the slogan 'Que se vayan todos!' (All Politicians Out!), an urban piquet blockade of the stock market, banks and multinational corporations took place in the commercial district of Buenos Aires on 19 December.

In solidarity with the Argentine popular rebellion two days of social disobedience have taken place in Australia, Italy, Belgium, England, Spain (live streaming from Barcelona here and here), Jordan, Finland, Germany, and elsewhere.
