Falcon Rowing and Canoeing club took the initiative and obtained funding to give canoeing lessons to boys from Aslyum Welcome. The boys, between 14 and 16 years old, are refugees and asylum seekers. Some are unaccommpanied without their parents. Their response to this initiative was fantastic to watch. More are needed.

Last Thursday six boys between 14 and 16 years old started a canoeing course at Falcon Rowing and Canoeing Club. Not much of a story perhaps but how much positive news do we read concerning refugees and asylum seekers.

It is rare for a private organisation to obtain a grant and offer Asylum Welcome a free course. Falcon Rowing and Canoeing Club did exactly this. Peter from the club approached Asylum Welcome saying he had funding. He hopes to get further funding so the boys can be trained in racing canoes with a view of racing against other clubs in the future.

I was lucky enough to attend their first lesson and observe their enthusiasm and how much they appreciated this opportunity. After what they have been through it is great to see something good being offered to them. It is money very well spent. It is a pity more private organisations do not do the same.
