The best way to deal with professional spammers on indymedia...

Phatpat | 05.06.2003 11:33

...is to ignore them! There are spammers like our own dear realist who attempt to clog up the threads or initiate false ones at other indemedia sites around the world, and they often fail because no one will engage with them

Well, its just that I've noticed that these guys almost always succeed in derailing threads here on indimedia uk, because people actually engage with them, which often takes the thread right away from where it should be - on the news. There is no point engaging with a professional spammer - its what he wants. Theres no point posting angry retorts, he'll just enjoy it and lead the thread further away. You are doing his job for him. Ignore the designed to inflame rhetoric, go back to the original post, read what THAT said, and reply or respond only to that. Also, its often sooo easy to spot a paid spammer's own newswire posting - how often (yawn) have we been assured of the existance of weapons of mass destruction on Indimedias newswire in say, the past fortnight? Hmm. No one bored yet? If you find your email inbox is clogged with rediculous ads for cheap Viagra, porn and misplaced fortunes, what do you do - delete and move on, or reply with a critique of pornography and capitalism? Indimedia's just the same - dont give the spammers an inch, a jot of credibility by reading or replying to their posts.

The point is, other sites have found that where these parasites are concerned, silence is golden. We could learn from that. Dont buy their shit.

I noticed at the end that you refered to an 'inch'. I am encouraging everyone to start using metric terms and I think your piece is an excellent example. In future, it may be more useful to refer to 'centimeters' and 'kilos' etc. Then everyone will feel more comfortable. Has anyone else got any suggestions?

I've come to the same conclusion really, although sometimes i can't resist taking the piss a bit.
There used to be someone called Harlequin who eventually disappeared after people revealed what a hypocrite and how inconsistent they were.
However with Realist how ever much you try to reason or take the piss, they won't ever listen.
Yeah lets ignore the "Realists" and other spammers.

I know I should ignore him, but I just have to respond this last time to realist.

Project for the New American Century, which Wolfowitz and tonnes of others are a part of, EXPLICITLY states that they need war on Iraq to enhance their power in the middle east, because of the oil, and that even if Saddam's regime fell, it would still be neccessary to invade.

And another thing...

Know we shouldn't respond but... talk of bias Realist, but what about your favourite papers you've told us to read - The Times and Telegraph? Hardly unbiased. (Don't try responding to me Realist cos this is my only post i'll make to you.)

From Guardian

Paul Wolfowitz
A report which was posted on our website on June 4 under the heading "Wolfowitz: Iraq war was about oil" misconstrued remarks made by the US deputy defence secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, making it appear that he had said that oil was the main reason for going to war in Iraq. He did not say that. He said, "The most important difference between North Korea and Iraq is that economically we just had no choice in Iraq. The country swims on a sea of oil." The sense was that the US had no economic options by means of which to achieve its objectives, not that the economic value of the oil motivated the war. The report appeared only on the website and has now been removed.

Why the Open Wire has been suspended

The North Carolina Independent Media center will not tolerate posts on the Open Wire that include threats, racism, homophobia, classism, and sexism. Examples of unacceptable action on our website include but are not restricted to: hate speech, threatening comments of any type, and altering posted photographs.

Vigorous debate on the Open Wire is encouraged, so long as it stays on topic, is not reduced to personal attacks, name calling, and provides a feeling of open expression.

Due to several threatening posts on the Open Wire, we believe it has stopped being an good place for open expression. We have collectively decided to improve our website and in the interim suspend the Open Wire section of our site.

We regret having to take this step. We will reopen it as soon as we can.

Here are some suggestions for posting to e-mail lists or web forums.
DO NOT POST FLAME BAIT!
THis is from the North Carolina IMC.

DO NOT RESPOND TO FLAME BAIT!

Flame Bait: Intentionally accusatory and harsh material that is written with the purpose of attacking people with the hopes of eliciting an angry response. (i.e. Bait)

Flames: Strongly worded, even violent writing in response to someone else's flame bait or unagreeable writing.

In the interim if you have news that follows the guidelines of our mission statement PLEASE send your stories to  nc@indymedia.org.

We are actively searching for the best way to allow you to post and comment to the open wire while retaining a productive and focused atmosphere.

Thank you very much for your patience!
