Saturday sees the continuation of demonstrations in Thessaloniki. There are reports of more than 100,000 people in demonstrations called by the Greek Social Forum, Action Thessaloniki 2003, and other organizations. Summaries: [1] [2][3].

An international march started at 5.00pm in the city of Thessaloniki, in protest of EU policies on immigration [1|2|3] war, pension reforms and a European common army. An Anti-EU-summit concert with the participation of Greek and international groups is planned for the evening.

Anarchists occupying Thessaloniki University marched this morning through Eganatia street, damaging two banks and a McDonalds restaurant. There are also conflicting reports about anarchists vandalising offices of the Greek Communist Party. The police responded with a lot of tear gas, and repelled the demonstrators. In the evening the University campus was surrounded by riot police and the demonstrators withdrew into the campus, which police are not legally allowed to enter. The campus is surrounded by police, although everything is reportedly calm at this point. The live stream radio stopped its work. A large number of police officers is outside the university campus. Street fighting is reported outside the campus near the Faculty of Philosophy. There are confirmed reports that 30 arrests have been made, unconfirmed ranging up to 50. The situation is confusing and we are trying to clarify what is happening.

17 :00 The black block, having stood at the university for the night, marched to Eganatia street. A bank (Agrotiki), offices of the Greek Communist Party (KKE) and a McDonalds restaurant were attacked. The police responded with a lot of tear gas, and repelled the black block.

The black block tried to return to the university back but was blocked by the police. Street fights followed.

As far as the great demonstration on saturday is concerned, the picture is not yet clear. however, a lot of people intend to take action either independently or with other organizations, but up until now, the officially announced calls are: 17.00, the Greek Social Forum, joined by the syndicates from Vardaris square to the New Promenade, the Initiative Genova 2003 from the statue of Venizelos and Thessaloniki Resistance 2003 from Aristotelous square.

19:35 University: At least 30 people have been arrested by police in connection with street fights close to the Philosophical faculty. The police are using massive amounts of tear gas against the activists. The University's council are considering to let the police arrest people in the University's grounds, something the police does not have permission to do. People trying to enter the university have been arrested. The legal team are not allowed to contact the people arrested.

After reports that undercover cops were seen in front of indymedia, about half an hour later the internet radio station has closed down now.

1. Legal update:
here are over 100 arrests, 25 appearing in front of judge today
at the moment there are still 22-35 in jail, all others realesed
in jail 1 US, 1 British, 1 from Syria, 2 Spanish und 2 Austrian.
Apparantly the Syrian is an political activist living in Greeece, who is politically pursued in Syria. Apparantly his lawyers say it is quite an important case that he should not be deported.

Arrests of people and material damage during the incidents.

Seventy three (73) people, Greeks and foreigners, were detained by police services in Thessaloniki, during incidents, that took place in the centre of town, today afternoon.

The incidents were provoked by people who were installed in the space of the university in the previous days. They were equiped, amongst other things, with molotov bombs, iron bars, rocks, wooden sticks, axes, with the intention to use them against police forces and provoke damage and serious incidents.

The incidents were focused primarily, in the centre of town and the space that is included between Egnatia-Platia Agias Sofias and Egnatia-Paleon Patron Germanos.

Material damage was caused to 21 shops, 2 banks (Agrotiki, Peiraios), 1 kiosk, and 2 bus stops, while 2 shopd and 3 vehicles were burned.

The actions and intervention of the police forces, was done according to a specific plan and the climax or spread of the incidents was prevented, while there were no serious injuries.
