Merseyside Police marksmen who shot dead Andrew Kernan outside his home will not face criminal charges. The Crown Prosecution Service today (Wednesday, May 7) ruled against taking action. Andrew's mother, Marie Kernan, branded the decision a disgrace saying she would not give up her fight for justice.
Andrew Kernan was shot dead outside of his flat in Liverpool’s, Wavertree, Wellington Road area. After the killing in July last year Greater Manchester Police launched an inquiry at the request of the Police Complaints Authority.
They interviewed more than 300 people and compiled a huge dossier. That file was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service who had to decide if any police officers involved would be charged with a criminal offence. Today they told both Marie Kernan and Merseyside police chiefs that no action would be taken.
Marie Kernan said: "I have waited a long time for this decision and hoped that justice would finally be done…but they have basically said it is okay to shoot and kill an innocent person…Andrew was left for dead like an animal and the people who did it should be made to pay for what they did."
