Manchester peace protest ends with violence

22.03.2003 22:16

Castlefield, Manchester City Centre - The peaceful demo of about 3000 dispersed after a brief confronmtation with police. I have just been released from Manchester Royal Infirmery after racists in a pub near Castlefield started shouting aabuse at protesters. This was followed by bottles being thrown and then I was hit on the top of my head by something - probably a rock or a bottle. Fortunately despite pools of blood I am OK now but this shows the ignorance of some of those who are pro-war and the problems we face. I am glad I was the one hit rather than the teenage Muslim girls who were the real target of their abuse and bottles. Coincidently despite 10 minutes esarlier being surrouned by 100 police there were none around to ensure we get past the pub of racists safely.
