Anarchists in Cardiff anti-war protest

Cardiff Anarchist Network yesterday blockaded a Cardiff Street as part of the day of anti-war protest. Taking part in the protest were such well known anarchists as George Bush and Santa Claus, who was last seen being bundled into a police van...

A group of activists from the Cardiff Anarchist Network chained themselves together to block one of the busiest roads in Cardiff, as part of yesterday's global protests against war in Iraq. The blockade took place during an anti-war march through the city centre bringing the march to an abrupt halt and causing traffic chaos.

The action brought many a smile as taking part in the protest were figures that appeared to be George Bush and Santa Claus! Other marchers responded by holding an unplanned sit-down protest in support.

The Anarchists said that they resorted to direct action because the government finds it so easy to ignore traditional marches and protests. „400,000 people marched through London and no-one took the slightest bit of notice. The government doesn‚t give a damn about the views of the ordinary person in the street. If the anti-war movement is going to have any impact whatsoever it has to move to direct action and civil disobedience, it has to involve people in active opposition to the war and government machine, it has to get people to take back control of what‚s being done in their name.‰

The action ended with the arrest of two of the blockaders, including Santa Claus who was last seen being bundled unceremoniously into the back of a police van.

Keep everyone moving to prevent arrests!

That is what is needed in all major cities. As there were arrests maybe it would be a good idea to keep everyone on the move such as was done on Mayday last year around Mayfair and Soho. A sort of critical mass without the bikes. A mobile sound system playing anti-war songs would also be good as well.

civil disobedience sometimes involves arrests

Sound systems and snake marches are great, but not always viable. Sometimes you just need to mount a direct challenge to authority, good old fashioned civil disobedience!

Luckily for us they don't seem over keen to prosecute peace campaigners round here. Those arrested were released on caution on the stated grounds that a day in court would be too much publicity and 'a waste of tax payers money'.

So don't be too afraid of upsetting the boys in blue. Whatever the consequences, it can't be as bad as sanctions, depleted uranium poisoning and repeated bombing raids.
