Strasbourg: result of Ahmed's trial

no one is illegal | 21.08.2002 18:39

Ahmed, arrested at a demo during the Strasbourg border camp, was sentenced today to 8 months and fined ca 700 Euros.

"noborder in exodus" report that in his trial this afternoon, Ahmed was condemned to 8 month in jail, including 5 month of probation, that means he only has to do 3 months. He has to pay 2 bills (one for "outrage/insult?/", the other for "violence") worth 380 and 350 Euro.
A press conference was held before, with pretty flowered and coloured masks, and huge cardboad-made guns. Only 7 persons were allowed to enter the audience room.
A more detailed story about the hearing will be posted soon.

Ahmed was the only person from the noborder camp who was locked up in prison after his arrest, and the charges against him were the heaviest. 7 other people will stand in trial next february, and many more who were arrested on other occasions of global protest are also waiting for their trials.

Ahmed's support team adds:
"You were all cool to make various actions, thank you for the informations and statements, we will write a complete report tonight. Kisses and see you later"

Report from Ahmed's trial

Report from Ahmed's trial

Ahmed's trial was held on wednesday 21 August in an atmosphere of a state of siege:
* the tribunal was blocated
* guards and national police were great more than usual
* only 6 people were able to be present at the trial

These measures are a proof of the unfair and exceptional treatment Ahmed has been a victim of: incarceration, isolation, denial of a lawyer at his bail hearing, remain in custody, refused visits...
Ahmed has been sentenced to 8 months prison, with 5 suspended.
During these last months and within the context of "zero tolerance" we have noticed that sentences for similar acts (outrages and violence towards a police agent) have been much heavier.
Therefore we can say that this sentence is not a recognition of his guilt, but constitues an attempt to intimidate the mouvement.
The verdict stands as a condamnation of the actions accomplished during the no-border camp.
During the trial, a clear will was shown to ignore its political dimension as well as the police violence: the statement of an activist who was injured by a rubber bullet during the demonstration was never heard; moreover, the repeated incoherence of the policemen's statements has never been challenged.
The prosecuters tried to stigmatise the no-border movement in a very caricatural way: "paramilatary group, specialised in urban guerilla"; Ahmed was also insulted ("coward, insignificant"). The last straw was that Ahmed had to listen to the final verdict manacled.
About 100 people demonstrated in front of the tribunal whilst actions were lead in France and in Europe (cf communique.)
The outcome of this trial, the first of a series, won't remain unchallenged.
Through this trial, we all are targeted, as we intend to subvert the established social order and to destroy the chains which emprison our desires.
We demand the abolishion of the isolation regime injured by Ahmed and by many other prisoners.
We demand, in the name of no-border and of all the members of the groups and individuals who took part in the camp, the immediate release of Ahmed and the end of the prosecutions against all the other accused.
