Irish Government Prepare for Sellafield Disaster

Concerned | 06.07.2002 08:30

Irish Government have issued Iodine kits to households to protect against nuclear fallout from Sellafield.

A friend recently returned from Ireland with the disturbing news that everybody in Ireland has received Iodine kits to combat nuclear fallout from a terrorist attack on Sellafield.
I did a search to confirm this and found:

If the Irish Government are taking steps to protect their people, shouldn't we be concerned about our own safety?

I guess Iodine tablets would be pretty futile if Sellafield went up - Greenpeace reckons that the UK and a large portion of Western Europe would have to be evacuated if the Sellafield storage tanks exploded.

Wouldn't it be ironic if we became nuclear refugees, looking for a country to take us in who are prepared to foot the bill for our medical treatment!

Not wishing to advocate anything potentially unlawful, I merely enquired in a few chemists whether Iodine supplements were available, but I got strange, vague, suspicious replies, and in fact i think they didnt know . Does anyone ?

Iodine Man

plenty of iodine available

Here's a link to Finland's office of public safety, which has stuff about radiological hazards in english. (compare to Iodine Man's enquiries at chemists in, presumably, britain).

the british Food Standards Agency mentions that 120g fillet of haddock provides enough dietary iodine for an adult for one day.

Iodine tablets are suitable to be used in addition to evacuation , or to give the public the impression that the government is doing something and keep them quiet.

search the internet for them - probably available on order from US firms as diet supplements, if not available in britain

Irish Iodine distro is bullshit

The only reason the irish government distributed iodine tablets was because a minister got caught out on radio last year claiming there was a complete plan in place to deal with a sellafield disaster.

This plan seemed to consist of a leaflet which was in production, which once written would protect everybody from fallout etc. The radio programme was big news here for a couple of days, killed off this guys career (Joe Jacobs) and is a comic masterpiece.

The iodine tablets were just a surreal follow up.
