Request for support in British Columbia, Canada
L.MacDonald | 13.06.2002 14:49
The province of British Columbia is undergoing massive reductions in services, plans to privatise, and democracy is dismantled daily. We need support from other countries to resist the brutal right wing neo-liberal economic agenda and request letters to the editor from well-informed academics, health workers or professionals, labour and others' to discredit the govt's poorly considered agenda.
The province of British Columbia in Canada has a governement that is quickly implementing the neo-liberal economics policies promulgated by the IMF and WTO. For instance, there are massive reductions to social assistance with time limits, dismantling of the judiciary through closures of legal aid offices, the closure of the Human Rights Commission and reductions to services in health care along with destruction of collective bargaining with unions. Further, there isn't an Offical Opposition to this government since they have a whopping majority in our Legislature. We need letters from academics, lawyers, economists, health care workers and professionals, labour, and others to publicly discredit the policies of this government. please send them to the following websites: http://www.globe and mail.ca or http://www.canada.com to the Vancouver Province and the Vancouver Sun. Also, please send letters to editor@theprogress.com. thank you for your support. peace. for further info. please try these websites: http://www.gov.bc.ca and http://www.policyalternatives.

also, speaking of police. i attended a rally in Chilliwack protesting the closure of the Human Rights Commission( in violation of Canada's commitment to a UN treaty and a black eye for Canada's well-known role as a leader in the field of human rights), dismantling of the judiciary and the statement of the Attorney-General for the prosecution to show tolerance in cases of spousal abuse. there were police and sheriffs at this rally from our Interior--and we were only 30 women and children in number! we request assistance from other countries to speak against reduction in services, privatisation and dismantling of democracy. it doesn't feel like Canada, anymore.

"Women are bearing a disproportionate share of the burdens imposed by SAPs. The macro-economic thinking on which SAPs are based, takes little account of the gender-based division of labour. For example, SAPs promote export-oriented crops, which tend to be grown by men, which (l)eaves women with little support, marginal land, and fewer resources to grow food crops to feed their families. In addition, cutbacks to public services result in a greater workload for women as they struggle to pay extra fees to secure health care and education for the family. Often, these cutbacks simply place such services out of reach."
What the people in British Columbia, Canada, and the whole rest of the world need to do is teach these misogynist/racist Yanks a lesson- STICK IT TO THEIR BLOATED WALLETS! BOYCOTT THEIR MULTI-NATIONAL CORPORATIONS! And stick it to their lackys in your government-keep protesting-threaten to withhold taxes if they keep cutting services, that sort of thing!
