Writers Boycott Nestle Festival
Bristol Nestle Resistance | 28.05.2002 15:02
Germaine Greer, respected and noted feminist and writer and Jim Crace, a former Booker Prize nominee have pulled out of the Nestle sponsored Hay-on-Wye literature festival. Germaine Greer said in an interview, "...I will not take part in an event where a Nestle banner is sported." She rocks! So do you Jim!!! It's also interesting to note that the Guardian, who normally cover the ongoing Nestle debate seem to missed coverage of this particular twist in the ongoing saga. Could this be because they also are sponsoring the event? As a progressive group we find ourselves turning to news outlets like CCN and the Telegraph for news coverage of this walk-out?!!?

Leaflet at the Hay Festival

However, the financial section of The Guardian has produced a factually inaccurate article suggesting the boycott should be called off. This has been sent to boycott supporters by Peter Florence, director of The Guardian Hay Festival (its official title) and was used by Nestle CEO, Peter Brabeck, when the baby milk issue again dominated the shareholder meeting in April. The Guardian has lots of writers with different opinions, so let's not get too upset and wait to see if The Guardian's daily updates from the festival will cover the demonstrations set to take place. Nestle Vice-President, Niels Christiansen, will be taking the stage on Saturday 9th June, although he appears to have little connection with literature. Having said that, he has written a few responses to our letters reporting violations which show great imagination!
