Rome, 2 millions protest! What is really happening in Italy ?

ink | 23.03.2002 16:37

--

Today 2.000.0000 people demontrated in Rome against Berlusconi
neo-liberist labour policies. CGIL, the biggest trade union, called
workers to protest against the abolition of art.18, an article
of the labour law preventing workers from being fired without
valid reasons.
An anti-terrorism colour was added very recently to the demo. This because
exactly three days before this enormous protest somone claiming to be part
of Brigate Rosse (Red Brigades, a terrorist group dead more than 15 years ago),
killed Prof. Biagi, advisor of the welfare minister for the labour market reform.
The Social Forum and Disubidients movement, which brought 300.000 of the 2 millions
in the streets, don't beleive in the existence of these new Brigate Rosse and
thinks they are a group controlled by corporate capitalism against social struggles.
Next stop for the italian movement is the general strike against Silvio Berlusconi
regime which will be joined by all the unions and by the movement.

Will Blair get the picture?

Hopefully this will send a clear message to Tony Blair that people are sick of right-wing policy, sick of the rich getting richer at the sake of the workers, and sick of capitalists shitting on the people. Only a week after the EU summit, where Blair, alongside his new buddy Berlusconi, called for privatisation of public services across Europe, 2 million Italians go out to protest against exactly what Blair proposes.

The next step is for the British left to take a lead from the Italian workers. When Blair proposes the privatisation of the tube, the privatisation of the NHS, and the bombing of Iraq, will we follow the lead? Last week there were 500,000 on the streets of Barcelona. This week 2 million in Italy. A protest culture is emerging - lets join it.

Nigeria have taken a stance with a nationwide strike against unjust economics and politics, we wimps don't react because we are too comfotable and pampered in our indulgent and entertaining Brave New World. It's not us who are getting bombed and bled dry, yet.
