No To the Strategy Of Tension!

A press release by the Italian COBAS (Base Union) on the murder of Professor Marco Biagi

PRESS RELEASE

Preceded by a bomb near the Ministry for Internal Affairs with TV cameras which saw nothing, pre-announced by a secret service report which claimed that government advisers were in the sights of terrorists, there arrives, as punctual as clockwork, the murder of Professor [Marco] Biagi, who (by yet another curious coincidence) had his armed escort in Bologna removed on 1st January last.

This "exemplary" action in its cold-blooded rituality of death is a chilling message to the entire labour movement, to all those who have taken to the streets to demonstrate against the policies of social restoration on the part of the centre-right government, those who are building the mobilization towards the general strike. It is an explicit invitation to stay at home... As the government starts to topple under the weight of social conflict the bombs and murders start - once more the strategy of provocation and/or tension rears its head.

Whoever they may be, the murder is manna from heaven for the Berluskoni government and Confindustria [the Employers' Federation] who have already started a reactionary backlash against the legitimate demands of the workers and the movement of struggle and have announced police and judicial reprisals against the social opposition.

The murder of Professor Biagi is intended to spread fear among the workers and throughout the country.

The Cobas [Base unions] will not allow themselves to be intimidated. We believe that we must double our efforts in the struggle until such a time as the government retracts the changes to Article 18 and Maroni's White Book, to pensions, severance pay, education and tax.

In the face of so much hesitation and withdrawals among the ranks of the mainstream unions, Cobas also believes that it is indispensable to go ahead with the General Strike of all workers at some point during the month of April (the 19th being the most probable date at the moment), a strike which needs to be reinforced through a national demonstration in Rome.

I send a message of love, solidarity and support but mostly resistance to the dark days of 1982.

I petition you, global indymedia collective

So most of you at the Global Indy Media Collective feel obligated to post the statements by Luca Casarini and COBAS, who claim a government "conspiracy theory" ('strategy of tension) to assassinate one of their own, to discredit and demonize the left in preparation for a consolidation of far-right capitalist power. So, you seem to think that it's good to post that as a front page, major, story, even though there is no evidence at all to back up the claim. But, I agree that that is good, because a rational and convincing argument for reasonable suspicion is laid out. Excellent. But if you can post that with no evidence, then why... why, can't you bring yourselves to post any of the actual evidence that suggests a US government "conspiracy theory" to turn a blind eye to terrorists in order to consolidate imperialist power over seas, and again, right-wing capitalist power, at home? What did you base this decision on?
Gut feeling? Media peer pressure?
Did you decide the evidence would somehow inconvenience your anti-war message? This argument does not stand.
The evidence points to an action that would undermine the entire capitalist rational for the public to go along with their imperialist expansion in the first place, as well as decimate the blind patriotic faith the capitalist/government uses to manipulate the people.
Do you think it would divert attention from the fact that the "third world" has legitimate reason to be angry with US homogeny? This to, does not stand.
The perpetration of a mass murder by an illegitimate, right-wing, military/corporate, foreign power, in order to demonize, terrorize, and, exploit, defenseless "third world" nations, is quite a legitimate reason for "third world" nations to be angry.
Do you believe the US really found a blurry and incoherent confession tape of Bin Laden?
There's a film of big foot I want to sell you!
Why is it not important to you that the great majority of the people of the muslim world do not agree with the US backed "conspiracy theory"? You can immediately publish and legitimate such claims against the Italian governments "conspiracy theory", yet similar claims by half a billion arabs, north africans, south, and central asian, peoples are not worthy of printing?

I petition you, the global indymedia collective, to stand up, stop accepting what is determined by the establishment left media to be the limit of "respectable" journalistic investigation, and continue on with all your new and youthful strength, to push beyond politics, into reason and truth. Your position in this pivotal time in history is so much stronger then you seem to realize. Now, at this time when the US has set a new standard of imperialism, *you* have the opportunity to set the standards of the new activist media. Set them high!
In the context of recent events in Italy, can we afford to continue to potentialy allow right-wing regimes across the globe to follow America's lead and deceive hundreds of millions into blind nationalist war mongering through the use of terrorism and assassination? How many more suspicious acts are to follow? How many will die? How far can this strategy be taken if no one stands up to it?.
