Clissold Park - council reverse decision

Clissold Park User Group | 13.01.2002 13:09

All the Hackney parks are in a perilous state as a result of the continuous lack of funding and latest round of cuts by Hackney Council.

We hope the proposed Hackney Parks Forum should be a way forward. Only by standing together, united, can we begin to win back the cuts from our urban green spaces.

The Clissold Park User Group is delighted to hear that the decision to close the animal enclosure and paddling pool is not to go ahead.
Many thanks all those who have supported the campaign to oppose the closures.

However, our cafe still remains closed, until arrangements to re-open it with a proper franchise arrangement are carried out. The park without the cafe feels very unwelcoming at present, particularly in cold or overcast
weather, and especially for the very young and elderly.

The next meeting of the Clissold Park User Group will be at 11am, on Saturday, 26 January in Clissold Mansion.

London Fields User Group are currently campaigning to re-open there paddling pool which has been closed, in spite of rebuilding it in 2000.

They also have an Olympic size Lido that has been closed for 12 years. For more info on the Hackney Parks Forum, or the cuts to London Fields email:  london-.fields@virgin.net

Abney Park Cemetery had 10% its funding cut this year and they STILL have not heard what level of funding they will receive in the forthcoming tax year (I feel another campaign coming on) There is a meeting on the 16th Jan at 7pm to discuss London Biodiversity Stratergy.

A Volunteer day on the 20th Jan 2-4pm
And Tree planting Day on 27th Jan 10am-4pm
Meet at the Visitor Centre

Cuts to Hackneys Parks

All the Hackney parks are in a perilous state as a result of the continuous lack of funding and latest round of cuts
by Hackney Council.

We hope the proposed Hackney Parks Forum should be a way forward. This will hopefully be implemented in March. Only by standing together, united, can we begin to win back the cuts from our urban green spaces.

The Clissold park user group recommended that we continue campaigning for funds to sustain the Clissold Parks animal enclosures, and paddling pool.

Despite the fact that councils have described these facilities as being SAVED, they are to be funded by sponsorship. No-one in the user group has been shown a coherent sponsorship strategy. and feel that this will be
used as an excuse to close the facilities at a later date.

Personally I find this unacceptable! The funding for these
valuable community resources MUST be incorporated into the parks main stream budget. It is for this reason that we feel the need to continue the campaign.

If you fine people could spare a few stamps to annoy some Hackney Councilors this is definitely the link to click
on...  http://www.banshee.co.uk/oh_deer/addresses.html

The next meeting of the Clissold Park User Group will be at 11am, on Saturday 9th March in Clissold Mansion.

Abney Park Cemetery The Trust’s grant from Hackney Council has been cut again What is even more worrying is
that the current funding lasts only until April next year. We still do not know if further cuts will be made then.
(I feel another campaign coming on)

Shoreditch Park It is very difficult to make cuts to a park that has totally non-existent funding. But to add insult to
injury, Shoreditch New Deal has withdrawn its £2.4 million funding from Shoreditch Park. This because Hackney Council would not be able to maintain it.

London Fields User Group are currently campaigning to re-open there paddling pool which has been closed, in spite of rebuilding it in 2000. They also have an Olympic size Lido that has been closed for 12 years.

Hackney Downs Proposed cuts will result in the discontinued maintenance of the bowling green and to reduce the number of park rangers from three down to one. This will put park users at risk when there is no ranger presence on the Downs.
