Neo-Nazi rally flops

Anti-fascist | 12.01.2002 15:41

Today's rally organised by the neo-Nazi National Front in Bromley has badly flopped - only about twenty boneheads turned up and there was zero local support. However, there was a strong turnout from both the Anti-Nazi League and some autonomists too!

At noon today, the Anti-Nazi League was in position outside Bromley South BR station in order to "welcome" the National Front march. Shamefully, the NF had been allowed to organise a "rally against sex offenders", which was of course a blatant pretext to bring their vile racist and homophobic views out onto the street and into the public domain.

At one o'clock, the fascists duly turned up, having caught the train from Victoria. They had some Union Flags and posters of Sarah Payne (the little girl who was killed by a paedophile in Kent). . . head boy Terry Blackham was there, with about two dozen friends . . . altogether a very poor show, given that the rally has been organised for weeks. There is an argument for having neo-Nazi rallies and marches banned altogether, but judging by today's performance, the cops were right to let this one go ahead, since it is very embarrassing for Mr Blackham & co to admit they only have about 20 supporters in a country of some sixty million!

Half an hour later, the fascists marched back under heavy police guard. They slunk into the railway station and were immediately entrained back to central London. Hopefully some of them will stick to football violence from now on!

you call yourself an anti fascist but say it is "shamefull"
that the neo nazi's are "aloud" to march?
is that not a fascist point of view?
you think someone should ban them from marching because you dont agree with what they are saying?

The sole prescence of the nazis is fysically a threat to the working class generally and homosexuals, immigrants and dissabled people especially. Therefore we cannot allow them to move freely out on our streets!

This is not something to ignore, we should never give them any platform to organise themselves. Never. We all know what happened when the nazis in Germany were ignored.

This comment is directed at Mr Troll, a.k.a "real anti fascist".

Did you actually get out of bed on Saturday to oppose the Nazis, or are you just wanking off from the comfort of your own home?

What I actually said was "there is an argument for banning neo-Nazi rallies altogether . . ." I did not say "I think neo-Nazi rallies should be banned." Read between the lines, dimwit!

Obviously, it would be an authoritarian point of view to suggest that groups such as the National Front should be outlawed. Which is precisely why I said no such thing.

I used the word "shameful" in the context of the NF's hijacking of the Sarah Payne murder to make political capital. I reckon the police should have allowed the march, but not allowed the posters of Sarah, if only to preserve the dignity of the girl's family. How would you like it if one of your relatives was murdered and then her face was used as a poster girl for neo-Nazis? This kind of selective policing is perfectly possible - after September 11, the cops let an anti-war march go ahead in West Yorkshire, but then banned it when they discovered it wasn't an anti-war march at all, but a pro Bin Laden rally, which is something entirely different.

Blacks, Asians, gay men and lesbians deserve proper protection from the activities of far-right groups. If this means working in conjunction with the police, then I am happy to accept this. Your "anti authoritarian" comments just make you sound like a complete wanker. I sometimes wonder if I am more in danger from Nazis or from thoughtless pseudo-anarchists who claim to be on the same side!!!
