BBC latest project: who can WE vote for ?

Auguste | 29.11.2001 17:13

The BBC has begun to cast around for nominations for whom they call "Breat Britons". I didnt take any notice until I saw thay were giving rather heavy handed "hints" for the "preferred bidders".

So heavy it could hardly be called subliminal. Essentially, establishment figures apply for the pst, Monty Python style, but they are the type only fit to cover banknotes : Scott of the Antarctic, Imperialist Queen Victoria, Issac Newton. Set incongrouously to the stains of a Great German Composer...
Question is, who could WE nominate ? Most activists who might appeal are either not sufficiently household names, or are simply not British (not enitirley clear how defined, that)! Winstanley, Ludd, Glyndwr, Tyler, a bit obscure, and other possible nominees are a bit to close to establishemnt histiriography, such as the Pankhursts. Frankly, Id rather nominate Mary Millington ! In fact I might...
But I think we need a tactical vote; we need someone who appears to be 'establishment' but who held quite radical views. I nominate John Milton, poet of the Republic, and perhaps only second to Shakespeare (himself a formidable political critic)

VOTE FOR JOHN MILTON !

Unless you can think of a better choice. probably can.

I reckon Marie Stopes would have to be a contender. Or...what about Guy Fawkes? And who's that bloke who owns Harrods, the one whose son killed the princess - yeah him, I reckon he'd be a good nomination.

i think it applies to anyone born in the british isles - does not have to be strictly english establishment.

i nominate james connolly, irish marxist leader of the easter rising - though i know he won't get in.

the problem is too many people see churchill as a great man and you just know he'll be pushing for the top, if not a certainty.

depends who votes i guess,

Dic Penderyn

It's gotta be Dic Penderyn, iconic martyr of the Merthyr rising of 1831...and while we're at it he can have a pardon, too...160 years too late, but better late than never...

Who is Harry Roberts/

01.12.2001 23:29

Who is Harry Roberts? England's greatest hat-trick hero that's who? Scoring three in the Cop end (not to be confused with Kop End) Harry Roberts sealed his place in sporting history by three superbly placed shots which threw the opposition into complete confusion. Harry's name could be heard on terraces throughout England right through the 1970's and beyond. They think it's all over? It's not yet!!!!!!
