MayDay in Galway,Ireland

Rua | 08.05.2001 14:13

200 in EyreSquare celebrate MayDay with little or no police
presence.

On 7th of May,Galway and its peoples celebrated their MayDay
on the official May Bank holiday.200 people settled down in
Eyre Square in beautiful sunshine to listen to musicians from across the Globe, speeches about the Environment +
people and poems and songs from anyone who could. The atmosphere was peaceful and joyous as MayDay should be.The
event began at 2pm and continued well past 7pm.The theme
of the event was 'PEOPLE AND PLANET' and was organised by
'Globalise Resistance'-a broad coalition of anyone who gives a shit about our Planet and its peoples. This years event attracted twice as many folks as last years event which in turn attracted infinetely more than the year before
because MayDay had been dead in Galway for over 10 years but has now risen once more and will rise again next year.

Glad 2 see the West's Awake =:-)

Yeah, your right about Indymedia's clock :-)

Glad 2 see the West's Awake
- and that the people of Galway are celebrating
the Worker's Beltane
but one thing puzzles me- & please, no ofense intended - but i'd like to ask respectfuly;

But Doesn't 'Globalise Resistance' consist of a coalition of lead by the SWP, manipulating more conservative labour/green groups in Britain, and of the SWM/WSM with green liberals in the Irish republic -

-and if so. how should autonomos groups and individuals whowho also gives a shit about our Planet & People- should relate to this coalition

In solidarity,
Workers of the World Tonight!
Blessed Be-
=:-)

Globalise resistance is indeed run by the swp but there are loads more that wish to be active or aware.I dont believe G.R. will survive long I believe many groups and individuals will begin without even knowledge of Karl Marx or the 'great' leader Lenin but with arealistic view of life
experienced and not observed in a birdwatch box.Anyway I think people could just see G.R. as simply a time and date
in a place to link-up and from there who knows(not the swp
anyways ha ha)

Globalise Resistance Ireland

13.05.2001 12:40

Hi, my name is Garry Walsh from Dublin, and I'd like to assert that Globalise Resistance in the Republic is not just an SWP front, nor is there any reason for concerned individuals not to get involved with g.r.

The group was setup after a Globalisation & Resistance conference organised by not just the SWP but a group of organisations including One World, the Green Party, Debt and Development, Gluaiseacht, WSM etc. The group was set up to provide a new focal point for anti-globalisation and anti-capitalism in ireland, and to co-ordinate events of mutual interest. We are trying to build this into a major independant umbrella organisation and yes, the SWP have a great involvement in running g.r., it is not just an swp front!

I myself am quite involved in the group, and maintain the website. I am not an swp member, and am just one of many individuals in the group concerned about the rise of global capitalism and want to do something about it.

GLOBALISE RESISTANCE

24.05.2001 23:05

hi ya my name is mick dunne. I am part of Globalise resistance, it is not
an SWP front. It is an umbrella group co-ordinating all the groups in
Ireland. You see what we need is action, not theory. G.R protest i a
peaceful manner, which is mst effective. I am not and never have been
a member of the SWP, Itink they try to give you propagnda, which peole
dont like. It has do be done un an independnt basis, or else it just won't
work. There is a socialist element to the group, but tat is natural, but it is
not part of the policy. It is an individual basis, not a group one, but it is
obvious that a lot of socialists will be drawn to the forefront of the group.
Anyway the dbate rages on, but at least we have a vioce, not like before,
where we could not group together. Now we have a movement and it is
about time that we were united with our European counterparts and start
movement in Ireland that will actuallyrepresent people. We eish to get
involved more with other groups. Well anyway i shall be back. See you
all in Genoa!!!!!!!!!!!
